I can't believe I don't know this - but can someone please help me with the proper layout for a trophy?  I mean the text that is put on the thing.

Would you say ...

-------------------------------------------

   3rd Place - Under 1300 Section

          George Munroe

    SCC Summer Tournament 2009

-------------------------------------------

in which case the person would receive a blank plate on the day of the tournament and we would get in inscribed later, or is it more customary to leave out the name ?

-------------------------------------------

       2nd Place - Open Section

          Scottsdale Chess Club

       Summer Tournament 2009

-------------------------------------------

I'm sure many of you out there know all about this stuff.

I'm sorry, I really don't know. But most I've seen leave out the name. That would probably be better. And you can just leave a space for it to be put on later, if they choose.

I am sure they inscribe it later .

Are you talking about a trophy for chess.com?  If so, use an image editor and inset text, saving that text as an image file.

No - a real trophy that one would get upon winning/placing in chess tournament.  Isn't there anybody on chess.com who has played in a real tournament and won something ?   Just curious.

Sorry, I've never played a real chess game before, only online.  I've played over the board, but never in an official tournament or anything.

I won third place in third grade, but I doubt that it's correctly engraved.

Well, in the absence of any useful info from this group - we had to go with something - and so we went with the following 3 lines on the trophy (club name changed to protect the guilty)

2nd Place - Under 1300

Lakeview Chess Club

Summer Tournament 2009
