The Vendée Globe takes place every four years and has historically been dominated by the French but if Thomson takes the lead over Le Cléac’h, he will be the first British skipper to win the race.

On November 6 last year Thomson was one of 29 sailors to wave goodbye to their families and hundreds of spectators at Les Sables d’Olonnes.
