Well yes, we noble personages don't go up there much, awful places like Manchester, Liverpool and Leeds for example.

Oh that's a pity because they're quite charming in their way. I live in Wigan and I'm not from here but rather like it. I'm originally from the two Northern Counties in England. Along perhaps with Cornwall, they're the best counties, of course. Less people live in them. If you were to visit Wigan, you could eat a pie.
Unfortunately, they don't really have pheasant here. I particularly like pheasant, even though the meat is rather dry. Did you know that you can't even get pheasant pies here??
Is that up in that North place then ?
Well to me, is isn't. The North starts in Wigan. At least, on this side of the country. I know that people all over the place like to think they're Northerners but the centre of Wigan is built on a hill. It's a very old Roman town, at least 2500 years old. If you stand in the centre of Wigan and look to the North, East or West, there are hills and woods everywhere. You couldn't see Wigan for trees, 20 years ago, but now there are less. Look to the South and it's just flat. It's really the edge of the Cheshire Plains and no-one in their right mind would consider Cheshire to be in the North. So it's difficult because, of course, everyone wants to be in the North, except Southerners.

It's not until you visit Carlisle on a Wednesday night in November that you understand the meaning of "up North"
It's similar to what my dad used to say when anybody complained about the weather.
"It's not until you visit Carlisle on a Wednesday night in November..."
... it's cold, damp and miserable

I was born in Egremont but brought up in Whitehaven. We moved to Morpeth when I was 14, on the other side of the country up in Northumberland.
My wife and I have been out in Carlisle on a Wednesday night in November. Twice, about 12 years ago. She was employed to do bits of work in colleges all over the country, sort of checking up on them. Called external moderation at the time. I often went with her to different places if I was doing nothing else.
Lola, I see you're from the Virgin Islands...you probably wouldn't understand
Lola is from everywhere. A few years ago, she was from Hawaii. I might even know her because I used to play chess for Warrington Central and Widnes, after I left Wigan Chess Club. Also for Great Lever in Bolton and EEC in Fazakerley, Liverpool, which at the time I could drive to in 23 minutes from my home in Wigan, along the M57 (doing about a ton). Things ain't what they used to be,

Lake District to the northeast... A true Northerner

Wigan was the center of my Brothers world in the Late 70's. He was a regular at the Wigan Casino.
Why thank you, Optimissed. From what you say, Lola seems to have been around a bit. That being so , Carlisle might be reassuringly familiar.
Wigan is a mystery to me. Is an M57 some kind of assault rifle?

Sounds fun. I was spending 3 1/2 years living in London at the time, which I enjoyed tremendously. But in the end I found I was getting on random trains at weekends, just so I could walk randomly round cornfields near Saffron Walden. I had to leave and move North again.

We were brought up in a small Hertfordshire village. I remember my brother getting dressed up early Saturday and getting the bus to Luton, where a coach would take them to Wigan. Funnily my Dad was a large, hard-drinking Irishman who could not work out how my brother could go out for 24 hrs + and not smell of booze the next day... But I digress... 😊
No old bean with my loads of dosh, I will just buy the pub !
