What are the main reasoning for/against gender separation in chess?

This might not be a new issue,

but I truly wonder if girls and boys play chess together, without a need to separate the genders, why do we still have this convention of separating people based on their gender in high level chess bouts?

In addition, there is a true open up discussion - on a scientific (biology and social psychology) scale, which does, more or less, recognise that the conventional / binary male & female doctrine is inaccurate.

How has this issue been reviewed and handled within the chess community around the world?
