What came first, chess or checkers?

(in my opinion) checkers is for people who don't know how to play chess! but i have no idea which came first, i would say chess came first.

If this is a trick question I'll go with checkers since it's first alphabetically.

From Wikipedia:

Checkers:
"The game has been played in Europe since the 16th century, and a similar game was certainly known to the ancients. In the British Museum are specimens of ancient Egyptian checkerboards."

Chess:
"Sometimes called Western Chess or International Chess to distinguish it from its predecessors and other chess variants, the current form of the game emerged in Southern Europe during the second half of the 15th century after evolving from similar, much older games of Indian origin."

So... the answer is that they both had similar ancient versions of themselves.

I would have thought that checkers came first because it can be played with things lying around like rocks and the rules are much more simple
