Adam was a young boy who lived with his mother and his father in a house. It was a small house, containing of very few items. Adam’s family was usually in a gloomy mood. But it went down even more when father passed away. Instead of inheriting a large sum of money, like Adam had expected, all his father gave him was a teeny tiny, itty bitty, marshmallow. This had also decreased Adam’s mood. What the heck was the supposed to do with a marshmallow? Even though his father had warned him not to. Adam swallowed that marshmallow in one gulp. He knew he shoul dn’t but what could possibly happen? Nothing seemed to happen, so Adam went to bed, thinking about all the possible things that could happen, and about the marshmallow and his father, and his last words.
“Son, take this marshmallow, but do not eat it. Treasure it forever, as a weapon above all evil. And when the time is right, destroy it. For it beholds great power.“Great power.” Adam mumbled to himself as he went to bed. That was just, plain silly. What could a tiny marshmallow do? It seemed so tiny, so little, so bitty, compared to everything else. Adam had heard stories about magical swords, crowns, plants, even markers, but a marshmallow? Adam shook his head. It was too much. Well, more like too little. His thoughts raced through his head like a world famous athletic racer running to the finish line. And his thoughts prevented him from sleeping. He tossed and turned, and turned and tossed. “I give up!” He yelled. “I can’t sleep.” But the moment the words escaped his mouth, Adam could feel a sleep body. His eyelids felt heavy. His body felt lazy. And as he lay down, his eyelids nearly got glued down to his face. Adam was asleep. It was a long time when Adam woke up again. He rubbed his sleepy face, and looked around. Everything looks blurry. Adam had forgotten about the events the night before. “Dad?” He asked. There was no answer. Then Adam’s memories came flooding back to him. He remembered everything, about the marshmallow, his father’s death, and a bunch of other things. But Adam’s mouth was jaw dropped open in shock, and that was not the reason why. There was a huge hole in the floor, and chairs and tables were everywhere! There were papers all over the floor, and a bunch of broken glass. Not to to mention the roof was all gone, and the stairs leading downstairs had collapsed. Adam carefully jumped down. His mom was throwing a tantrum like a baby on the floor. The downstairs was also in terrible condition. “Mom, do you know why are house is so-- bad?” Adam asked. His mom pointed to the TV. It was on. The screen was cracked, and the TV was knocked over, it was a miracle it still worked. There was a woman on screen, and she was talking. “Yeah yeah, nothing new, hey Jon, pass me the report, you saw what attacking the towns yesterday? Oh yeah, a giant marshmallow attacked several towns last night…. Adam turned it off. A giant marshmallow? He had heard enough. And the lady on TV was a bad reporter, she hardly gave any details. She hardly seemed to know what was going on. Adam couldn’t blame her for that. But based on the condition of his house, Adam assumed it was his town that had been destroyed. Adam went outside. There were trees toppled over, and the houses weren’t exactly Adam’s idea of nice. There were people running around everywhere, woman screaming, children crying. There was a tall dark haired man standing on what was left of the town stage. “Calm down!” He said. The town’s people were instantly quiet. “Listen,” The main said, “I know we’re all freaked out because our town was destroyed by a giant marshmallow but that is no reason to panic.” He said. Adam perked up. He wondered what was going on. He squeezed his way through the crowd. “Watch it!” Someone said. “Don’t be so rude.” Said a woman as Adam headed up front. “Sorry!” “Sorry!” He said. He got another glimpse of the man on the stage. He was blabbering about something Adam couldn’t hear. “Any questions?” He asked. The crowd was silent. A short woman raised her hand. “What’s the plan?” She asked. The man’s face turned red as he got angry. “We’ll rebuild our town!” Adam didn’t like the sound of that. He wanted to learn more about the giant marshmallow. Who it was? What it did? Adam’s mom finally stopped crying as she came out of the house. “Come on!” She said. Adam followed her as they headed to another town. “We should help” Said Adam. “You know, rebuild the town.” Said Adam, with a sigh. “It’s what father would do.” Adam’s mother turned around. “Your father is dead.” She said softly. “There is nothing we can do.” She said. Adam still thought they could consider rebuilding the town, but he shook his head. He and his mother walked a long long way until they came to a town, and even longer when they came to a hotel. Adam was very tired when he got to his bed. He fell asleep at once. When the woke up, the hotel wasn’t very nice. It was in terrible condition. Like the house, it looked as if there had been an earthquake. “No, don’t tell me,” Said Adam, “the giant marshmallow struck again.” He said. His mom nodded. “Are we the only ones left.” Adam looked out the window. This time the town was empty. And other buildings weren’t that great. Adam scanned the horizon, but there wasn’t anything! “We might as well go on to another town.” Said Adam. His mother nodded. “Might as well.” The trip, like last time, was long and boring. Adam was so relieved when he saw a building! And another! And another! And a hotel. There was a big sign under the door.
Helga’s house of hospitality
“Shall we go in?” Adam asked. “Yes.” Said his mother. They knocked on the door. A short woman opened them up with a smile. She shook their hands really hard nonstop until Adam was dizzy. “Hi.” “Hi.” “Hi.” “Hi.” “Hi.” She said. “I’m Helga, welcome to my hotel!” She screeched. Adam tried to be polite. “Hi, I’m Adam.” He said. Helga smiled even bigger. “Your rooms are anywhere you like, we have cupcakes and doughnuts and cookies in the kitchen!” She said. Adam was hungry and tired. He ran all the way to the kitchen. And Helga pestered him with questions. She blinked about five times in a row. “No!” Adam yelled. “I didn’t like it!” He was tired of losing his home, tired of walking, and tired of Helga’s over the top antics! Helga’s eyes began to water. And she began to cry a river of tears. (not literally) “You didn’t like your stay!” She wailed “I am a failure!” She cried. “Nobody likes me.” She said. Adam knew that Helga was acting very childish. She only looked to be 19 years old. Still, Adam felt bad. Should he apologize? Adam knew it was wrong but if she was sad she wouldn’t be so over the top. But Adam knew the had to do the right thing. “I’m sorry, I hurt your feelings.” Adam said. Helga wiped away a tear, sat up, and bounced up and down. “I forgive you!” “I forgive you!” “I forgive you!” She said, clapping her hands. She looked so happy, despite her broken hotel. “Listen, Helga, me and my mom are gonna leave this place, and find a new hotel.” Helga jumped up in joy. “Can I come?” Adam didn’t even bother to say no. He knew she would tag along anyways. “Yay!” Hegla clapped her hands and ran around, asking questions the entire way there. “Do you like puppies?” “What’s your favorite board game?” “Where are we going?” “What’s your favorite ice cream flavor?” Adam was tired of asking questions, he wanted to yell at Helga, or get rid of her when he got a brilliant idea. “Hey Helga, I forgot my lunch from the hotel, can you go get it?” Adam lied. “Okey-Dokey.” Helga ran away, really fast she she out of the way in seconds. “That was mean.” Adam’s mom said. “Sending her away.” But Adam was glad that Helga was gone. Soon they came to a town. There was a big hotel with a sign.
Irine's Inn
“I hope Irine isn’t anything like Helga.” Said Adam. “Not to worry.” Adam’s mom said. “Helga is one of a kind.” Adam knocked on the door. A slender girl opened it. She had her hair in a bun. “I’m Irene.” She said sweetly. “Welcome to my hotel.” Adam breathed a sigh of relief. This girl wasn’t anything like Helga. “You can go in room 415.” She said. “You have a roommate.” She smiled happily. “Would you like me to take you to your rooms?” She asked. Adam shook his head. “No thank you.” Adam and his mom walked carefully to their rooms. “I am so glad to get away from Helga.” Adam said. “Me too.” Said his mom. They opened the door, and there was a very familiar face. It was no other than… Helga herself! “Hi, I knew you’d come back!” She said. Adam was shocked. “What are you doing here?” He asked. Helga touched his nose. “What are you doing here, silly?” She asked. Adam rubbed his eyes, it was a little hard to explain. “We’re both here.” He forced a smile. “What a coincidence.” Helga slapped him hard on the back. “Well, what matters is you’re here, ‘ol buddy.” She said. “Ow.” Adam said to himself. “That hurt.” “Say do you know what happened to my hotel?” Helga asked. “A giant marshmallow ruined it, and i am sure it will happen… again.” Adam said. “I wanna see this marshmallow, myself.” He said. “Can I help?” Helga asked. “NO!” Adam shouted. “Why not?” “Give me three good reasons!” “Why can’t I help?” “I could help if you gave me- “Fine, you can help!” Adam growled. “Yay!” Helga shouted. “So what’s the plan?” Adam explained it carefully to Helga. “We set up a video camera to record everything that happens!” Said Adam. “Maybe Irene has a video camera.” Said Adam. Helga gasped. “Oh my gosh,” She said, “Let’s go check!” Adan and Helga ran down the stairs. Irene was taking notes. “Oh, hi.” She said in her mature, sweet, voice. “Do you have a video camera?” Said Adam. “No, I don’t think I do, but I might have on in the basement, just go in that door.” Irene pointed to a door by her desk. “Thank you, so so so much!” Helga said. Adam tip toed down the basement hoping to lose all track of Helga. “Trying to get away from me!” She shook her finger as she came down. “Naughty.” “Naughty.” Adam sighed. He had had just about enough of Helga. “Look.” Said Adam. He pointed to a video camera. He carefully set it up, outside. “Neat.” Said Helga. And for five whole seconds she was quiet. “Oops. I went five whole seconds without talking!” She yelled. “Help!” “Help!” Adam slapped his forehead. “You are insane.” He said as he went back in the hotel. Helga followed. “Hi!” She waved to Irene. She waved back. By now it was late at night. Adam collapsed onto the bed. Finally, some peace and quiet! “Do you believe in ghosts?” Helga whispered. “Let me sleep!” Adam yelled. “Say the magic word.” Helga smiled. “The magic word!” Adam yelled, and next thing he heard was Helga snoring. Adam tried to get some sleep. But even though Helga’s bed was five feet away, Adam could still hear her snoring. It took forever for Adam to fell asleep. At 5:00 in the morning Helga woke him up, full of energy. Adam had expected the place to be ruined, and ruined it was! Adam went to check the video camera. It was still recording. Adam turned it off and hit play. The recording showed somebody turning into a giant marshmallow at the full moon. Adam was shocked! It was none other than… Adam himself! “I’m the marshmallow monster.” He whispered. “What?” Helga asked, peeking down at it. “Traitor!” She screeched. “I’m gonna talk to Irene.” She said. Adam was so happy. But still, he had been turning into a marshmallow out of control! Adam just had to see what was going on. The, Helga, and Irene went to another town. Helga was very annoying, but Irine’s soft gentle “please” kept her quiet. But Adam’s mom seemed to enjoy Helga’s talking. When they got there, Adam went straight to the doctor’s office. “I have an appointment, right now.” Adam told the doctor. “Oh yeah.” Said the doctor. “Follow me.” He looked at Irene and Helga. “You too stay here.” He said. “Okay, what’s the problem?” He asked. “You’re supposed to know!” Adam showed the doctor the recording. “Bring me an x-ray.” He yelled. Two short people brought in a big machine. “Step in front of it.” Said the doctor. Adam stepped in front of the machine. It showed his bones and his organs. It also showed a huge marshmallow. “What’s this?” The doctor asked. It was almost a full moon, it had taken forever just to get to another non- destroyed town. Suddenly, Adam felt himself puffing up, getting bigger and fatter, and turning into a marshmallow! “Help, me doctor!” He yelled. Adam couldn’t control himself! He kept doing things without trying to. And saying things like “Sorry!” and “My bad.” It was an entire night, but Adam finally shrank back. “It seems that a marshmallow has taken over you and learned to control you.” Said the doctor. “And how do we remove it?” Adam asked. “Time travel!” The doctor winked. He led Adam to a machine. “Hop in!” He said. Adam hopped in. “How many days have you been a marshmallow?” The doctor asked. “4!” Adam called. “Let’s go back 5 days.” Said the doctor. Adam told the doctor about the marshmallow he inherited. “Don’t eat it!” The doctor warned. “Believe me!” Adam said. “I will not.” Said Adam. The doctor went away. Adam once again listened to his father’s last words.
