What is really the goal in chess?

Hey guys, what is the real goal in chess? I know a lot of people say it's checkmate, but also for an opponent to resign. And timeouts? Playing for time isn't real chess, but you can win in chess.com by time. Sometimes, I also think winning by time means nothing.

Winning by time means that the opponent was too slow. There needs to be an element of time, otherwise people can just drag out the game while the other person yawns his life away.
