This is my favorite conversation starter at cocktail parties, especially with women.  Never fails to get people talking.Tongue out

So... WHAT IS UP WITH HER??

Etienne
Who cares, really?
greersome

Etienne, my friend... YOU WIN the first "Who Cares!" response award!

I thought it would take at least 15 minutes, though!  Laughing  You rock!Tongue out

i wanted to write a long essay about how she is a product of our decaying culture, but instead i'm working on a new chess playing interface :)
greersome

Bwahahahaaa....  your priorities are in the right place, Erik.

If anyone out there is conversationally challenged, I highly encourage them to drop this bomb at a party and see what it generates.  My problem is that I'm most tempted to ask a question at a party like...

What is up with___________________?  <== Insert political figure here.

What is up with Alberto Gonzales?!

But, many people these days don't know who Alberto Gonzales is or why anyone would want to ask what's up with him, so I stick with BS.  Yes, that stands for Britney Spears.  Wink

I really couldn't care less about Ms. Spears, but it does occur to me that she is fortunate to be living in this era. In the past a has been performer would quickly fade into obscurity. However, in the current celebutard era of being famous for being famous, she has retained her A-list status despite being completely irrelevant as a performer.

what a difference a decade makes.  ten years ago she was recording hit after hit and selling out concerts.   Now she's known for other reasons.

She apparently has a new album coming out. A single may come out as soon as next week. It will be very interesting to see how it does and whether she has a fan base left or is able to rebuild one.

Comebacks are possible. Remember Mariah Carey was dropped by her record label only to then release the best selling album of 2005.

What's up with Mickey Mouse????

I've heard he's on drugs or something...

Hmmm... Well ALBERTO GONZALEZ was our attorney general before he got shot at (politcally) and BRITNEY SPEARS is the product of this very superfical and money oriented western society. Residing in the "west" I see many of the problems native to this place. While all regions have their problems, I beleive they can all be solved ..............with chess????? JK

I'm not a fan of Mariah Carey either, but it does occur to me that, unlike Britney Spears, she can actually sing. Ms. Carey has, at least, a four octave vocal range, whilst Ms. Spears' vocal range is closer to four semitones.

You're right about Mariah's vocal range. However, technical vocal skills don't necessarily mean you can sing. It's what you do with the voice you have that make you a singer. Mariah was born with a great gift but in my opinion she doesn't have the artistic skills to make use of it. Mick Jagger is at the other end; technically he has a lousy voice but he uses it well.

Just because you have a Stradivarius doesn't make you a Paganini...

On this point, we'll have to agree to disagree.

As to Mariah Carey, I don't care for anything in her repertoire, but I think that she--and as much as it pains me to admit it, Christina Aguilera--can sing quite well... for a contemporary pop star.

I have to admit that when BS put out Toxic, I thought it rocked.  Sure it's digitally doctored, she's a freak and all that... but it's bubblegum pop, and sure bubble gum doesn't have the recommended daily allowance of vitamins and minerals, but you can't deny it's still fun.

I'm a huge jazz fan, personally.  I'm a big Herbie Hancock fan.  But pop has it's place.

Again, life affirming that "What's UP with Britney Spears?!" is STILL a great conversation starter.

Who watched the MTV music video awards?  What was she thinking?  What's UP with Britney Spears???

ChessDweeb
I don't care what everybody says about Brit. She's messed up in the head right now, BUT she still looked better than 95% of the girls on the street especially after popping out two pups. All the ladies in the house: Stop being player haters and hate the game. You can't compete with Brit. Don't be hatin' ya'll. All the men, you know what you really think, so keep dreamin'.
tbirdtird

I don't like fake women-Britney is fake.

ChessDweeb

What constitutes a fake woman? Do you personally know her? Have you ever sat down and had a conversation with her? Or did I just catch you looking at something you don't really want to admit? Hmmmm......

Or, maybe we should hold her to a higher standard than normal people with issues. Ever known anybody to get a divorce, breakup? Ever had a friend deal with dark tendencies that needed your help? Ever stop to think that she's just another troubled person on this planet that might need compassion and sincere love, not the grinding criticism from people that are no better off in life than her.

I think that everybody's getting off at seeing this poor woman fall apart in front of their very eyes. What's wrong with everybody? She needs help, not your incessant BS. And that doesn't stand for Brittney Spears.

KingLeopold
I always thought Brittney was cute
Darkcloudy

First of all,Mariah Carey has a 5 octave vocal range, and a whistle register.

Now,quite a debateable question.Who is better?Whitney Houston,or Mariah Carey?If we were in the time phrase 1980-2003.
