What kind of computer and OS do you use?

I run WinXP on a dell XPS laptop with an additional 20" widescreen dell monitor. I am going to avoid vista for as long as possible. I'd like to go linux, but they don't have Adobe tools that I need (Photoshop/Dreamweaver and yes, i know about the linux versions but they just aint the same ;). And I can't use a Mac because of the limited software and support for gaming.

You??

Claudio

Hello erik!

I always build my own systems, and my newest one consists of an Intel Core 2 Duo CPU running at 3.3GHz, 2GB of DDR2 RAM, a GeForce 7900GS and a 320GB Western Digital harddrive. For the monitor, I'm using a 19" Samsung LCD (5:4 aspect ratio, 1280x1024 resolution). For now I prefer this over a widescreen, just because some older stuff I run (mainly games) doesn't support widescreen.

I also have to say that I really agree with Erik regarding what operating system is currently the best: Windows XP. It is much faster than Vista. And Windows of course supports far more useful software and games than Linux or Mac ever will. So, Windows XP is what I use for now, but in the future I'll probably make the switch to Vista.

Erik is also right in saying that the free tools available on Linux (such as "The GIMP") just don't compare to Adobe's products. And don't get me started on Mac :) I have been a graphic artist for 10 years and you couldn't pay me to use a Mac, the OS just doesn't feel right to me (and what's up with these single-button mice?)

I could go on and on about this subject, but I will end it here :)

Hello everyone! My laptop is Acer (1.7; 512; 64; multi) and I use Windows XP Home. I am also going to avoid vista, as Erik, because I was "happy" to see it one day and was really disappointed. It is very slow. Windows firewall disturbs more than it helps. One needs a very powerful computer to run Vista comfortably.

I use WinXP like most people.  When I upgrade I will get Vista because there's little other choice.  I'd like to use and support a Linux based OS, but in reality I don't have the knowledge or the patience to try to make it work.

SonofPearl, even if you do have a knowledge of Linux, and patience, it can still be a pain to run.. :) But it is free. (I prefer FreeBSD for servers, though)

Home built system here.  It's few years old but it runs everything really well still.  I'm on a 19in LCD from before the widescreen craze and I'm running XP.

I use both Mac and PC, my PC is a quite old HP, 512 MB ram, 2.8 celeron...not really fast. But the mac, 2.16 GHZ Core 2, 2GB ram, 512 graphic card... its a beast compared to my HP

I have an Emachines because it was cheap with Windows XP. But it gets the job done. I hate Vista...it is horrible.

Yeah, Vista is much too slow for the kind of computer most people have (especially laptops).. the simple fact is, almost no one "needs" anything that Vista offers.

So I am proud to be the first Linux / Ubuntu user in this topic. My computer is a modest Acer notebook ( Sempron +3000)...

I own an HP with Windows XP and 512 MB of RAM.  I also have a Dell Inspiron laptop, and it works fine with Vista, but I prefer XP because it's much simpler to use.

I'm on a Macbook with Mac OS X, and the site works fine as long as you download firefox.

I have a box thingy in the corner and a screen about the size of a box of tissues, as long as my opponant takes about 2 hours to make his/her move it works fine.

Vista worships the devil!!!!  ok maybe not that bad but if youu are going to use windows my fav. is xp media center ver.2 it was the last one before vista.  Oh and now that mac use intel chipset you can run any window program on a mac, just use a program call boot camp.

You can run all of Adobe CS etc... from within GNU/Linux using Virtual Box or Wine.

I'm dual booting Win XP and Ubuntu Feisty Fawn GNU/Linux on a Toshiba Lifebook w/ 4 gigs of ddr2 RAM. (It originally came with Vista installed, but I summarily dumped it.) I'm going to have to get a Mac Pro desktop sooner than later--I'm not really a fan of Apple products--because I use Final Cut for work... and I frequently work from home.

I have an Imac I've had mine for about a year now and it hasn't suffered a major meltdown or crash yet. Easy for to manage with very few wires in the back. My other Computer runs latest OpenBSD with K-Desktop I compiled from sources (takes hours) it fetches all the sources all across the Internet. OpenBSD makes a solid desktop and it's super secure if your ready to roll up your sleeves and ready to put the work in the only trouble I had was getting the printer going but I found some help on a forum and followed the instructions and got it working in no time.

I did that once, circa 1997ish, with Slackware GNU/Linux. You're right, it did take hours to compile from the sources. However, it took me about a week to configure all of the device driver modules and so forth for compilation (I really had no idea what I was doing and I had to read a lot of man pages!) ...not to mention having to download the sources using a 33.6 kbps modem. Now, I'm strictly a "download the iso" kind of guySmile
