P-38 is correct. I am not referring to the plane. A Walther P38 is a pistol. For extra credit there is a P-51?

Yes, we need to teach kids how to use can openers. Very important. Don't forget to teach them how to use a fork, oh wait it's school so a spork is more appropriate.

I believe the P-38 and P-51 are military can openers

Cut out algebra. Completely worthless in practical life.

Every lesson in school should be introduced by “here’s where this applies in practical life”

yeah! like the math we'll actually use

ill never need to use pythagorean theorem so like

Part of it is you're learning how to learn.

Part of it is you're practicing abstract reasoning.

Part of it is gaining wide general knowledge gives you better intuition about the world.

Part of it is as a child you have no way of knowing what your interests are.

It's not important that you remember, for example, the Pythagorean theorem, but it is important that you're able to learn it, and understand it, even if you later forget it... and some kids will discover they really enjoy math, and go on to become mathematicians.

Posters don't seem to understand basic definitions or how to answer questions.

Op asked what should be taught? Responses were:

- a good education is important

- a good education is a good school

I believe the children are our future ...

Heh, yeah.

And with all the stupidity in the USA... I'd like it if some basic epistemology were worked into the K-12 curriculum.
