I'd buy a nice plot of land & then go from there.
That makes two of us.... a nice Yurt to put on it.. Totally off grid..Really stretching that $$$ out :)

Quit my job. By a small, one-bedroom house in my rural hometown. Live pretty much the same life as I do now, except not working.
I would study which group, or organization was the most trust worthy, which dealt with helping disabled animals(people included), and give them half. I would take $100,000 and divide it amongst my friends and family who wished it. I would then buy land for animals and friends to live upon, free of harm, and taxes.
#1 - Help people pay off some debts
#2 - get a nice little apartment and furnish it up with a corner for all of my chess stuff
#3 - open up my Chess Club that I have been wanting for so long
#4 - and put the rest in the bank
-Mark
Step one.
Pay off all my debts.
Step two.
Buy a house with plenty of land. (Off grid sounds perfect)
Step three.
Take 100,000 to help family and friends stand on their own two feet. (debt/car/etc.)
Step four.
Invest what evers left, so that I would not have a need to work.
buy a really nice old fashioned phonograph in addition to new turntables to replace my current ones, countless records I've always wanted, sound equipment, E-mu SP-1200 because it's awesome
after that I have no idea. a million wouldn't be enough to build my own particle accelerator!

Is 1 million enough to quit the job in the US.
if I had 1 million us dollars and I had no income and I spent the same as now. I could live 25-26 years without a income after that I would have to loan money or work.
I guess in demark I had to win 5 million us dollars to begin to have fun.
I would probably get rid of my debt if I had 1 mill dollars and go on vacaction for some time.
I'd say I spend about $16K a year so a million would last me 62.5 years (assuming no interest).
blow it all on stocks and hopefully it turns to 50 billion even though I'm more likely to lose it all
maybe use $10000 for a new maxed out alienware computer

It wouldn't be enough for most people, but I live a very simple, frugal lifestyle in a cheap, rural area.
ok. how about what would you do with a million dollars in one year.
The first thing I would do is buy my mom a house, and whatever else she wants. She'll probably want to upgrade her car or get a few.
set aside enough to start a small business, maybe a clothing store, or cafe, or bakery.
then if anything is left I'd buy a house, something simple, just as long as there was plenty of room for family and friends to come visit and have their kids run around. with a garden, and enough grass to play a little soccer.
I'd buy a few cars. a benz, bmw, drop top mustang, a jeep 2 door and a jeep grand cherokee ... and maybe a porsche. Then I'd buy a car for everyone of my family and friends...my grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins.
darn inflation... I'm pretty sure I'm out of money by that point, but I guess the rignt thing to do would be to donate some of it so I'd set aside some money for that before I started the car buying (unless buying a car for everyone in my family could be considered charity). Because you should always share your blessings :)
I'd buy a nice plot of land & then go from there.
