It literally had cocaine in it before it was made illegal. It fits into consumerist lifestyle, like movies, popcorn and coke. You have to get hopped up on something to make the ennui and shallowness of mass media and consumer propaganda bearable. Is there another way to get a somatic high? Most people haven't discovered it if there is.
