it has happened because you made it by yourself
the answer is you edited in some editing apps like pixteller or something else.then you have made the background transparent.you didnt add any picture but saved directly.then you uploaded here.am i right?

Well, Just type blank transparent png image and you get loads of such avatars. I used this one:
