Why does FOX have such a "right wing" reputation?

Sort:
johnmusacha

When I hear talk of the United States media, FOX is often mentioned as almost a right wing propaganda machine and a branch of the Republican Party information ministry.

However, I have watched a lot of FOX and can't possibly see shows like "In Living Color," "Married with Children," "The Tracy Ullmann Show," "Family Guy," and "The Simpsons" being right wing, or even political at all.

In fact, I don't even think the FOX network has an evening news programme like Dan Rather on CBS and the other two networks.

So am I missing something here? Or perhaps the right wing Republican slant is so subtle I can't see it? Please help me out.

Fox News has entertainment programs as well as news programs. While the shows that you mentioned are not political, they also have many shows with a clear right-wing bias, such as The O'Reilly Factor.

johnmusacha

Oh, ok.  I see.  I've seen some of O'Reilly's books.  Does his show come on before or after The Tracy Ullmann Show?

ghostofmaroczy

Hilarious how the answer came from Sun-Tzu.

I would like to know how the majority of the media does not have a left wing reputation.

Tracy Ullman hasn't had a show on Fox for over 30 years.

What's your point?  You might want to check your facts as well.

Wolfbird

My point is YOU have no point to this stupid thread.

johnmusacha

Please explain.  I don't understand your need for such vitriol either.  You seem angry.

The point is stated very clearly in the premise.  Nobody is forcing you to respond and to lash out with such vitriol.  If you don't like the topic, find another one more to your liking.

Wolfbird typifies people who have no point themselves: they attack others.  I would like an answer to my inquiry above.

I agree with you about that other poster.  She was also acting bitter and vitriolic on another topic recently.

I do believe that in America at least, the media does have a bit of a left-wing reputation.

Here's what I noticed;  In 2007 I would watch Neil Cavuto. In 2008 when the economy fell apart, FOX complained about all the free-loaders, the welfare recipients, people walking away from their morgage. Today you have rancher Bundy in Nevada who in 2 court decisions hasn't paid the federal government a dime. FOX didn't point THAT out. NO instead it was the big bad gov acting like a bully against a poor rancher. Banks on wall st who make enourmous profits but are too big to fail get gov subsidies. FOX news won't tell you that. The co-founder of Home Depot, Edelman, Tha Koke Brothers, George Sorrous, all emormously wealthy will go on FOX to complain about not making enought. Mean while, poor people can't afford health care. All the media wanted resonable changes in the gun laws after the Sandy Hook tragedy. FOX news had rich white republicans complain about resonable changes. FOX news created the complaning industry for winers. Their new phrase for the affordable health care act is, the death spiral. The whole country will be doomed if a few poor people get health care. If you have to ask about FOX news being too right wing; your standing too close to the TV when you watch.

I know one more thing you won't find on FOX news. Bill Gates, and Warren Buffett have spent millions of dollars of their own money trying to help poor farmers in Africa. I found out about on CBS--60 Minutes.            @ ghostofmaroczy;   I'm sorry, I stand corrected. Your right, I meant Rupert Murdoch.  I have Sooo many billionare friends, I get confused sometimes.  BTW;  having dinner with Ted Turner tomorrow.

I have to agree. I don't see any particular bias either way, except for the political shows like O'Reilly mentioned by Sun-Tzu. In fact, most of the opinions I hear O'Reilly expressing aren't all that "biased" either; mostly common sense.

Don't get buffaloed.

Cheers, Ronald.

I agree that a large part of the media does has at least some liberal bias (NBC etc), but Fox News is still the most watched cable news network. There's actually an interesting study on that here: http://qje.oxfordjournals.org/content/120/4/1191.abstract

"Most of the opinions I hear O'Reilly expressing aren't all that baised either; mostly common sense."

I'm not saying he's a complete liar, but it's hard to say he doesn't have a bias. He rarely criticizes conservatives compared to liberals. He also thinks Christianity is not a religion (so the government can promote it), that life was created by an intelligent designer, and that humans aren't causing global warming. It's a similar story with Sean Hannity and Greta van Susteren.

O'Reilly is more of a socialist actually.  I don't mean socialist as an economic socialist that advocates for government ownership of the means of production (and I guess that's another example of why political labels are bad) but I mean socialist as in he values the "national community" and believes that citizens should adhere to some sort of social and community norms meant to advance the community as a whole.  This of course is in direct contrast to the ideology of "individualism" that seems to predominate in modern political discussion on both sides.

He definitely has a conservative bias, i.e. hates big inefficient federal govt programs that should be handled at state levels, wants lower taxes, less intrusion into our privacy etc. Also, there is no scientific consensus that humans cause global warming. it might be, but it could also be that the climate is just fluctuating as it always has. many top climatologists say it is highly debatable.

Fox is as right wing as it gets, especially when it comes to news.
