---   I'm not really sure about that statistic. Las Vegas certainly did a great job getting players in the expansion draft. Meanwhile Edmonton is having big problems winning at home ( Winnipeg beat them last night 5 to 0 ). If the Oilers don't get on track soon they will be in danger of missing the playoffs this year.

the oilers teams of the '80's were poetry in motion.

Well there is good news and there is bad news. The good news is that spring-training is underway for Baseball ( Go Jays Go !!! ). The bad news is that the Edmonton Oilers will not get into the NHL playoffs so I guess the best thing to do is to cheer for that super new team in Las Vegas.

Well I should be happy as the regular season for MLB starts today but there is also sad news as well. Rusty Staub has passed away at age 73 and we have lost a guy who was very beloved by fans of the Montreal Expos ( played there 1969 - 1972 & 1979 - 1981 ). He was also well liked by fans during his time with the NY Mets.

i knew of him in detroit (hey, i was only ten years old then).

i actually heard on the news today that congress is considering making opening day a national holiday. mostly because so many people take off work to go to the first game. while this sounds like a great idea, opening day in all the different cities is on different days.

I gather that Staub was the only MLB player in history to have more than 500 hits with 4 different teams, not a bad record.

Well things are changing in the NHL as well because the Sedin Twins have announced that they will retire at the end of this season. They have played in Vancouver for many years but I guess that time catches up to everyone sooner or later.

With Sidney Crosby still playing for Pittsburgh I imagine that they are the favourites but I would like to see Las Vegas win Lord Stanley's Mug. That would be a real nice ending to that story ( I want the Oilers to win the cup in the 2018 - 2019 season, of course ).

So where did the Oilers go wrong in the 2017 - 2018 season ? Well their regular play ( 5 on 5 ) was not that bad, being at least average however their special teams were just awful. The penalty-kill was close to the bottom of the league. Very surprising however was the fact that their power-play also was not very good. I mean they have McDavid and some other good players and their power-play was way below average ? The Coaches have some work to do in the off-season.

A poor season for the Oilers. My prediction that they had a shot at the cup was way wide of the mark! Yeah powerplay was poor, penalty kill was overall poor. Although penalty kill was best in the league on the road and worst in the league by a distance at home which is weird. Probably a mentality problem I guess. Consensus seems to be that the team is too slow and that a lot of smart trading needs to be done. McDavid and Draisaitl are great but the rest not so much. Not this year anyway.

Well we are down to Las Vegas and Washington for the Stanley Cup, should be a good series.

Avatar of badenwurtca

Las Vegas takes the 1st game ( 6 to 4 ).

Washington wins the Stanley Cup in 5 games.

Richly deserved and nice that such a super-class player as Ovechkin has finally managed to raise the cup.
