Why is there no checkers.com?
Checkers is more like dominoes or cards, in that there are many variations. In my area of the southern US, Straight checkers and Pool checkers are quite common. I enjoy playing both Straight and Pool Checkers. Straight checkers is also known as English Draughts in the UK, but there is International Draughts played in France, Belgium and other areas of Europe. International Draughts (aka Big Board Checkers) is played on a 10x10 board with 20 game pieces per side. Russian checkers called Shashki is the same as International Draughts except it is played on an 8x8 board like Chess, Straight checkers and Pool checkers. Russian checkers is played in Russia and the Ukraine. Shashki ( Russian Checkers) is the same as Pool Checkers except that pieces bounce out of king row as kings, yet they are called queens. Where as in Pool Checkers single men bounce out as single men and must stop in king row to be promoted to kings. In Straight checkers and Pool checkers the single pieces are called men and the double pieces are called kings. Where as in Shashki and International draughts the single pieces are called stones and the double pieces are called Queens.
There is also Italian Checkers, Jamaican Checkers, Brazilian Checkers, Spanish Checkers, Thai Checkers, Canadian Checkers and of course Czech Checkers. In all all of these the pieces move diagonally, with rule variations based on whether or not kings can fly, if you can take to your advantage or must make maximum number of captures, board sizes, board orientation, and if game play is on the light or dark squares.
However in Turkish Checkers the pieces move orthogonally, rather than diagonally, it is played with 16 pieces per side on an 8x8 board and kings can fly, also max captures are required.
Italian and Straight checkers ( English Draughts) are the only two variations with out flying kings (or queens).
All of these variations are great games, but due to these regional variations checkers is not a truly international game like chess is. This, I would assume, is the reason there is no equivalent site to chess.com such as a checkers.com.
There are two forms of checkers that are not great games, one is a South African Supermarket chain, The other is an American fast food burger chain. LOL
Most serious Checker players play at PlayOK.com, there are also good checker apps like Quick Checkers.
