WW2 Discussion Thread

Drug abuse was regulated and widespread in the German armed forces, and most soldiers got introduced to Pervitin, a blend of cocaine and meth, usually mixed in sweets or chocolate.
Sounds delicious!
Historian Lukasz Kamienski writes that the German soldiers suffered from serious side effects from these drugs. They would get a sort of drug hangover and look like zombies (the mythical 'living-dead', not Rod Argent). No surprise there. From the Wikipedia entry: "Some soldiers turned very violent, committing war crimes against civilians, others attacked their own officers." Surprising this wasn't used as a defense in the Nuremberg trials..... or was it? It certainly sounds better than "I was just following orders".
Of course, the U.S. military was no angel in WW2. They regularly experimented with chemical and biological weapons on human subjects, invariably poor minorities. I heard a terrific broadcast on NPR a few years ago. They investigated experiments done by the army during WW2 with mustard gas. No, it's not some spicy aerosol condiment. It's nasty stuff and it can kill you. They locked black soldiers in a chamber and piped in the gas. The show featured an interview with a 93 year old veteran, Rollins Edwards, who was one of the unlucky test subjects. "It felt like you were on fire. Guys started screaming and trying to break out". Finally they were let out. Then they were told the tests were secret and they could not talk about them under penalty of dishonorable discharge and imprisonment. As a result, they could never say it happened and didn't receive any follow-up treatment. Many suffered debilitating after-effects for years and received no compensation. Sounds disturbingly similar to the raw deal some of the Gulf War veterans got.........
As Captain Devries said in The Caine Mutiny: "War is hell".
Just like COD Black Ops! But,instead of mustard gas, and the Americans doing the testing, it was Nova 6 made by the Nazis that the Soviets were testing on their own soldiers!

Germany made a lot of mistakes in ww2 , granted having numpties like adolf in charge didn't help , but they delayed the introduction of jet fighters as adolf wanted fighter bombers , instead , but the Luftwaffe with jets in 43 would have been the best airforce in the war at that time ,
then theres wasting transport for troops by using trains to shuttle folk to concentration camps
the assumption that Barbarossa would win Moscow before winter , and not kitting out the wermacht with cold weather equipment
so many errors but im glad they messed up as I would hate to have seen them win with their political leaders at that time

They would still exist

If they had, maybe your education would have informed you about the difference between "there" and "their."
But at this point it's pure fantasy.
Wouldn't matter. Their chess site would have auto spell/grammar check.

fascism is a defective governmental device
More the opposite. It's probably one of the most fundamental and appealing (in terms of psychology) organizational schemes.
It's just that it's only stable in numbers human evolution is more accustomed to (e.g. tribes) so that in modern times it doesn't do well because the population of modern nations is too large.
But for us, and our children, and our children's children, etc. it will remain appealing on a fundamental level.
Unfortunantley, thatis true. Growing interest in places like Italy where fascism existed and many people are supporting it. While fascism could be good, but only if there was a good leader that wasnt imperialist.

I think the bombing by the RAF of the hard water plants at Peenemunda , vital to germans development of nuclear missiles , was key to America being first to develop the atom bomb as no one was bombing America , so they could develop this without hassle
im certainly happy though that the divisive often inhuman political philosophy of fascism got stomped on as it is abhorrent to those who want a world where you are not judged by colour creed or gender
They also had almost unlimited manpower and resources, unlike Britian or France, as they were much smaller
