The reason they did it is that other members know that they are a premium member I think. also I think it looks cool too! I got a crown :D
What's the use of having a special icon next to your time if you're a premium?

It aids the elitism of those of us who would prefer to avoid games against freeloaders.
when my mate, a fellow basic member of chess.com who is currently stayin' in me castle, saw the emblem he said "where did you get that poofy crown" - I pointed out that I had subscribed cos I wanted the advantages that go with premier membership. All to no avail. He now refers to it as me tiara 
What special things does it do? Does it just make us more popular or what? I like the design, though!
