In this age of technology where many households have both parents working outside of the home and video games are king, family game night is becoming a cherished time throughout the country. Card games, charades and board games are all great fun for reconnecting and keeping the family close. Wooden board games, however, are more than a quick game that’s played on Friday nights. They become family heirlooms and memories of those cherished evenings spent together as a family.

The most popular wooden games are also the traditional classics. Chess and checkers are easily played on a classic, wooden board that can even be left out on display. Checkers is perfect for introducing young children to the concept of games of strategy. As they grow and learn the skills of this basic game they can transition to playing the challenging and stimulating game of chess. Chess pieces are available in every material from porcelain and metal to stone or wood. Choose a set that allows you to share another passion and enjoy having a centerpiece and conversation starter as well as an enjoyable family game.

The game of Mancala is adopted from an African stone game and when played on a beautiful wood board is particularly enjoyable. Leave it on display so you can teach the rules to friends and visitors, allowing them to discover the pleasure of this game for themselves.

The wooden board games that are available don’t stop with these popular games. Backgammon continues to be a popular choice with many wooden boards featuring the chess field on one side and a backgammon board on the reverse. Many people have never learned how to play this game, making it an excellent conversation starter when left on display. Many backgammon sets are also available in convenient carrying cases, allowing you to take the fun with you wherever you go.

Another popular game that can be played on paper or on wood is the counting game, Soduku. Tic-Tac-Toe, always popular with the little ones, can be rendered beautifully in wood and left displayed where the children can play with it. In addition to tic-tac-toe board games that feature the traditional square, you can also choose tic-tac-toe board games that are incorporated into larger designs such as trains or cars.

In addition to traditional checkers, Chinese checkers can also be played on a wooden board. Round solitaire is rumored to have originated in the prison cells of the Bastille and is the perfect choice for those times when you don’t have a partner to play with. The Pento Chess puzzle can be enjoyed by one person or several people, but be prepared to spend several hours trying to fit the 60 pieces back together again.

Another benefit of wooden games is that they consist of heavier pieces that are not prone to blowing away should the wind whistle in through an open window. Take them on camping trips to teach your children the joy of these popular games around the camp fire. Pack them in the car for traveling to see family so you can have enjoyable entertainment available for the entire family. Whether you leave your wooden games on display in your home or store them in the closet when not in use, your family and friends will enjoy playing on the smooth surface and beautiful finish of high-quality wood. Add wooden games to your board game collection and you are adding family heirlooms that will someday be passed down to your children.

Could you make the type a little smaller?  I can almost read it.

Don't worry; you're not missing anything.

Yes, a larger font and fewer words would have made better use of the space. Mancala is actually a great game.
