Automatically aborting games when tournament clock runs out

Hello,

Why is it necessary to abort games when the tournament ends? Games that do not finish in time do not count for the standings and we all agree on that. But why wouldn't they be able to be completed I wonder? What is the sense of pairing two players and then do not let them complete their game??

The fact that the site allows so encourages players not to resign in a lost position, or even worse when they are forced checkmated. This behavior is very common amongst some players and I can't report it because it's legal.

So, at my eyes there are no reasons for this to exist, but if someone (i.e. devs/staff) know something I don't know they are welcome to come here and enlighten me.

I would like, though, to add a suggestion. If you do not want to remove this "feature" then perhaps you want to improve it. What about stopping the abort of those games where one side has only one legal move or even better where one side is forced checkmated?

Kind regards

Deadban

I agree. I  would much prefer games to continue but not count towards tournament. I've just played a 10 min arena game where we both put in a lot of time  (8 mins plus)  but all that came to nothing because tournament finished.  It would be great if someone could explain the rationale behind this.

Aborting games due to tournament ending, probably happens due to lack of proper coding,

Obviously as a feature is seriously silly, if not straightforward re*****d. Unfortunately, the posts above seem old enough to realize that it's an old issue.

Bummer...

Arenas were designed that way.

Using the "feature" excuse for something that isn't any good, doesn't make it good.

The time & effort spent for a game, simply overrules any reason for aborting it.

I made no judgement of whether or not it is a good idea, just that it was as designed, therefore the coding was not improper. wink.png

All I'm saying is that it was easier to have all games aborted than code the allocation of the results. That is what I've meant by "lack of proper coding".

How easy it was may never have made into the discussion. It's not like the site lacks the ability to do it.

I would prefer that scheduled restarts, and aborted games at arena end, get flushed to the archive with an aborted status if they were over 10 moves or so. I wouldn't say no to an arena game continuing at the end and waiting for the game to finish to display the results either.

I was about to make a forum post about this, but then I found this.

As a suggestion, can't the games continue after the arena ends? I've had quite a few games aborted when I was completely winning and probably needed around a minute or maybe even 10 seconds to finish.

On lichess, games continue after the tournament ended and you still get your rating, even if you don't get tournament points. Can't something like this be implemented?

I wish this site would fix this problem. I've just played a tournament game where my opponent was stalling for time in a 10 minute game. I was 5 moves away from checkmate but they had about 10 seconds left before the tournament time ran out and they got a free abort.

Just do what lichess does and let us finish and rate the games but not count towards the final standings. It's annoying! You shouldn't be rewarding players for unsportsmanlike conduct.

This isn't a problem as said above its how arena's are designed,

Make a suggestion to staff and if enough people do the same it may change

I searched this to post my experience. first ever tournament, don't know the rules, having fun, winning losing it is great. Until the last game comes, we play super well game comes to an end, and I have mate in 2. there is 5 minutes left on the tournament time and my opponent has 7 minutes on his clock. I think to myself, even if it won't count in the standing, the ratings will because this game will eventually end. well I was wrong. he stalled on purpose, and I say on purpose because he also offered a draw at the very end. I am disappointed in this system and won't be playing tournaments. my great experience turned to garbage in the end. Thanks chess.com
