Chaturanga draws

Sort:
samuelebeckis

I think we are experiencing a small glitch in Chaturanga games, sometimes declared draws by the system when they are not.

Example: https://www.chess.com/variants/chaturanga/game/15908228

This game is clearly lost for me, my opponent is going to bare my King whatever I do. So I resigned but the system says Draw (insuff. material) How's that, please?

In case I am right, please, fix the rating accordingly to my opponent and me. In case I am wrong, please, let me know how 'cause I can't understand.

Agreed, K+N vs. K will result in draw by insufficient material, even though K+N wins on the bare piece rule.  I had a game against VariantStreamer where it was incorrectly declared drawn that way, and I was very surprised.

Here also: I won this one but the system says 'draw'.

I'm very happy and grateful to play Chaturanga here, though this bug is a bit annoying. My Horse did a great job capturing a Rook and 5 other pieces, but finally didn't get rewarded for that.

And yes I think it only happens with King and Horse which is a draw in standard Chess. Pity.

I hope the site developers will take the time to look at it and fix it one day.

jonathanhilton

Agreed, it should be a simple fix I hope, thank you to the developers who made this game possible.

This is not like modern Chess, here a knight is one of the strongest pieces on the board, it is huge to declare the game drawn when one is a full horse ahead. Anyway the rules described are different from the rules applied, isn't it absurd ? The radio-silence from the site staff is getting a bit frustrating ...

Thanks to the reply of a moderator, I have finally discovered that there is a specific forum thread for reporting bugs concerning Chess variants. So I've just posted there: more-or-less I repeated the same things said here, reporting the same games as examples (I haven't been playing much recently, unfortunately)...

Here is the link to the other thread:

Hopefully we will get that annoying bug fixed once for ever.

It's a draw because White ran out of time, while Black has no way to win (not enough pieces to deliver checkmate).

It's correct and it's exactly the rule that MUST NOT BE APPLIED to Chaturanga.

The bug is not only the one I mentioned, there's more then that. There are actually two bugs concerning the 'bare piece rule'. [Why not to call it 'bare king rule' ?].

  1. One bug has already been described above i.e. : when a player 'bares' the opposing King and owns a Horse the game is declared drawn by Insufficient Pieces [uh? that doesn't exist in Chaturanga] rather than being declared won by Bare King rule [someone call it 'baremate'].
  2. The other one is a bit more complex to explain. Sometimes the bare piece rule doesn't apply immediately. The underdog should have only ONE move for trying to draw, but in some cases s/he gets the possibility to make several moves before the system recognizes his/her loss. Why that? I don't know exactly...

When a bug occurs we can report it, WE SHOULD always!

How to report an in-game bug? Well it's really simple:

samuelebeckis

We keep having that annoying knight bug in Chaturanga games. One party wins the game and the system says 'draw game'. See example: https://www.chess.com/variants/chaturanga/game/19632496

I do really hope something can be done to fix it. Thanks.

TitanChess666

Please fix this issue...

Nan0atk

It tells that "White forfeits on bare-piece rule", but meanwhile it's declared a draw "½-½ (INSUFF. MATERIAL)" when king and knight v.s. a lone king.

The bug of "K+N vs. K in Chaturanga do need to be fixed, please!

From my last just finished game I got the feeling that something has changed. Please, give it a check.

Perhaps they fixed the bug, perhaps they added a new one!! We don't know...

samuelebeckis

Tha bug has been fixed, we can win with a Knight now.

Thanks Chess.com

I'm not sure though, it says Black resigned, rather than anything else...

samuelebeckis

Ah yes, that's in the move box, however the chat box says: "Black forfeits on bare-piece rule".

Fallen_Lord

Hi everyone!

Could you please explain, does in chaturanga a threefold repetition draw rule or the 50 move draw rule exist?
If not, the endgame K + N versus K + N could continue for an eternity.

jonathanhilton

Yes, they exist, though in ancient times it was 70 move draw, not 50.
