Chess.com should not restrict who you are allowed to play

One of my friends is active on chess.com and I like playing games against him. We don't care about the fact his rating is much higher than mine. All of a sudden chess.com has decided I am no longer allowed to play him unless I get more material.
If I try to start a game I get a warning about his rating being too high and then I cannot actually start a regular game.
This is annoying as we are working together on creating an opening/theory database using our games.
Anyone else experiencing this issue?

Weirdly I am also unable to play a regular unrated game with him. That would've solved the problem but it doesn't work unfortunately.
