I have suggested that off topic threads be removed from the "Most Recent" and "Hot Topics" categories many times.

They have been, from Most Recent, for a long time now.

In this case, though, a half measure is as good as none. If clicking Hot Topics stills show AMA topics and counting threads, then they are going to get traffic.

What I'm getting at is that at the moment the forums are so lax that they are full of rubbish. Just to give one example: recently that guy Cheetersallover (or whatever he calls himself now) was allowed to make a series of tiresome, attention-seeking threads whining about the moderators. That should have been stopped in the beginning. But because everything is so lax here, he could get away with it. So it just encourages him (and others who notice it) to do more of the same in the future.

If the rules were tightened up and pre-moderation were introduced, that sort of dross would be nipped in the bud.

Have staff make me a mod. I might only last five minutes, but it would be a memorable five minutes...

i'd be for that, and i bet many others would, too.

The important purpose of off-topic is that it serves as a place to move threads that don't belong anywhere else, such as absurd accusations of socialism because someone got blocked.

So it's a rubbish bin? Most people keep their rubbish bins out of sight, seeing as how they smell bad and look unsightly.

often today, yes. but, it used to provide levity at times.

https://www.chess.com/forum/view/community/accused-of-chatting (this was not moved to off-topic, but is an example of topics sent there in the past)

https://www.chess.com/forum/view/chess-buzz/james-bond-is-an-impotent-drunk

and, of course, trysts movie review topics. just a few examples.

so, it wasn't always junk, and you sound like you've been here before and might recognize some of those.

Almost seems like we don't get it and we'll never get it. They don't care. Like what the kids here post after they've exhausted all their justifications:

idc

High time we learnt this. But then there's nowhere else to go to get the original community that we used to have.

We're all just merkimers now

idilis

Dang an inactive 3 day account claimed @merkimer. I call dibs for my next ressurection.

It’s more like a yard sale. 90% is stuff you wouldn’t have bought new, but they did, then they wore it out, and now they want you to pay to take it from them. But, then, there’s an occasional item that you can use.

Well, the levity comes from the incompetence these days. A case in point: the auto-mod flags our posts like a sanctimonious schoolmistress. Yet the words "Call Girls in Dubai" sail through unaffected!

Which is weird, since the forums are regularly subjected to spamming attacks with these exact words. No one thinks to red-flag such a topic heading? Hello, wake up! 🙈

Does Erik have a business sideline that we don't know about? Or is this an added benefit for Platinum members?

Yeah, with your Platinum membership you get unlimited game analysis, unlimited puzzles, and also discounted call girl services in Dubai.

😜

It’s there in the menu under “other services”.

Staff was discussing posts with Erik from Al Czervik, myself, & Idilis. Erik's reply was straight out of Michael Douglas's play book. happy

There might also be a Macarena directive from the top.

so, staff, you are idi*ts for allowing this.
also of note is that i emailed cc immediately after the mute, expressing my displeasure succinctly. right away I received the boilerplate response of “we’ll get right back to you…”. they never did.

so, bots that don't work as they should along with absoliutely zero customer service.
i will never, ever, pay money for my limited time on this site. i’ll donate to lichess instead.

Support has been experiencing a very high number of tickets and has been working through them. That high load means it's taking an extended amount of time for getting a response.

They've been hiring additional support staff but it takes time to get new people up to speed as well. My understanding is they've made a lot of progress on the backlog, but it can still take time to get back with you.

You know Martin, maybe you wouldn't have this many tickets if the chess.com admins had a brain at all and actually removed this "automute" functionality based on words quoted.

I had a major incident with Chess.com (early 2018) where they muted me because I put in a "NORMAL MESSAGE" with no profanity, nothing inappropriate, NOTHING. Some other user was apparently out to get me, clicked on quote, changed the QUOTED PART, and the useless admins muted me and I was muted for a week for NOTHING, all because the LAZY ADMINS DON'T ACTUALLY DO THEIR JOB! They were forced to give me free membership time (3 months) in return for their wrongful punishment as I threatened to smear chess.com with NOTHING BUT TRUTHS on social media. It will still happen if I EVER get muted again wrongfully! That includes getting muted for this message as all I am posting are facts!

Like the OP has said, if the site would put their priorities on more important stuff, like having the autobots programmed to mute f-bombs or s-bombs instead of 5-letter I words with another I, an O, a D, and a T in it.

Get rid of useless policies like that and you'd be getting far fewer tickets. Try actually putting two and two together for once, and not getting five as your result!

The author of the original post is ONE HUNDRED AND TEN PERCENT RIGHT and EVERY ADMIN THAT HAS POSTED IN THIS THREAD IS WRONG!

i might have to rethink my 'i will never pay for this site'. i would need details, of course.

I just got automuted a little over a day ago because of the &^%*&%#*-ing quote system. I'm not sure exactly which word set it off. Have I said before that I hate this &^%*&%#*-ing system?

as @david would say, you should have known better. unfortunately we still don't know any better ... saaaaaaaaaaaaad

EscherehcsE

I'm seriously considering never quoting anything again. I might just use the lame system of listing the post number that I'm responding to, which of course fails if any post in the thread gets deleted.

bit by bit we'll stop using the features we used to use, and finally the forums.
