Game Abandonment Unclear/Unfair

It is unclear what this site determines to be game abandonment. I play on mobile and lost a few games because being up on time I thought I could view other apps while waiting for my opponent to move. After losing that way I assumed you just couldn’t exit out of the app at all. But in my most recent game which was a 60 minute game my opponent was taking very long to move, it came up with the message that they would auto resign in a few minutes. Then that countdown went away and they still hadn’t made their move for close to 20 minutes. So I left it open being stuck to not do anything else on my phone but wait since I didn’t want to lose to game abandonment. Then I see that they made a move so I immediately made a move, and expecting them to take a while I left the game open and walked away for a couple minutes only to come back to see that I lose to game abandonment!!!??? In a 60 minute game they took 20 minutes to make a move and I lost because I didn’t move in 4 minutes???? How does that make sense?

Perhaps you need to play more games or be an older member so that chess.com doesn't consider that you've quit the game. But if you close the window, you've given up.
