Is chess.com too lax on racial abuse?

I think chess.com is decent with how they handle reports like these... at least the ones I sent by email. They mostly get overwhelmed with the number of reports but they deal with them pretty fairly with the ones they have the time to review.

The way your original post has been written it gives more of an impression that those racial comments have emotionally disturbed you and hence your decision to play on the site more often .

It doesn't make you come across as someone who is strong

I am not sure where you see this, I actually think I treated it quite objectively and tried to bring as much data as I could to the discussion, all my opinions are here as disclaimers to try to make it as unbiased as possible - you have brought nothing but your judgment and your inability to consider the wider issue: racial abuses are frequent and recurrent on chess.com - chess.com treats them at the same level as other insults - which in my opinion is not appropriate.

We are not talking about someone raging after losing a game - that can happen to anyone - we are talking about people that use race to stigmatize other people or as a mean to upset them in a middle of a game.

And if you do that action is taken within 2 days and there won't be any need for you guys to scream aloud in the forums

I did just that (already told you), on several occasions, several months ago (this is all in my previous posts, which clearly you havn't read) - nothing happened. The screenshots included several use of the N word, added "stupid" and "weak", one suggested that I "Neck myself" and that I have a low IQ like all the people from my country  --- all these accounts are still up and running, playing everyday.

Again, this isn't about me - read my post, that I why I ran the experiment - this is about the fact that these abuses are systematic, and more frequent for people from Africa than at least from the US. Letting this types of comments slide is a sure mean to perpetuate a culture of racial abuse. Thinking that what chess.com is doing is sufficient - without considering the data behind it also perpetuates this culture of racial abuse.

This is not a comment on moderators or about how busy they are - this is about the level of sanction being the same for attacks which are different in nature - read my previous posts

PILOTOXOMXD

idk abt this

PILOTOXOMXD

it is a sensative topic, but there is an absolute trend that ur reports are addressed much quicker if u do have a membership.

My bad then . I am sorry for what you went through.  I was of the impression that when there's an email sent to the staff action is taken as quickly as possible. Perhaps an explanation to your case must be the fact that action is taken based on the frequency and not severity of the abuse. They might have muted those people and given them a warning ?

If i got "offended" and felt "bullied" every time someone got nasty with me online?  I would be spending a large part of my life playing the victim card.  There is a reason these types of people run in packs, and do things that allow them to remain anonymous.  They are cowards.

Im not saying people should not be bothered by this, Im just saying consider the source.

FoxWithNekoEars

well yeah... there are some abusive people on this site and it would be definitely nice if they were be punished by being muted or something...
thats all true the only thing i dont like here is that was claimed that cc is racist... thats not true at all its only those abusive people who are sometimes racist... and all these statistics that people of color have higher probability to be abused, are nice and interesting but there is nothing what cc can technically do with it... cc is just glad that it somehow manages baning and muting users overall... i mean what would you even want to do with that? solving racistic abusers by another metric then nonracistic abusers? thats really very silly i think... insulting random people should just be punished without seeking the reason why that person did that...

That is a fair point - but I'm not here to complain about being offended or bullied. Consider this - if there was a group of people on chess.com openly attacking you for your faith, stigmatizing you because of the assumption they make about christian people - wouldn't you try to defend it? Well, you defend your faith and I defend my skin.

This isn't about playing the victim, I'm not looking for your pity, this is about raising awareness on an issue affecting a community - and suggesting that the people that police this community take action. Of course there will always be packs of trolls on the internet abusing people - but this is why I raise the question (which people seem to be ignoring somehow....) - should racial insults be treated more severely than non-racial insults? -> this is one way to address the problem and no extra cost for chess.com.

In case this is ambiguous in any way - I am not claiming that chess.com is racist.

This is where I disagree with your arguments. The reasons and manner in which one insults someone matters enormously - if a community allows one to be insulted because of their skin color, faith, sexual orientation, it institutionalizes discrimination - if someone gets insulted because of their bad behavior while playing chess (stalling, trolling, spamming, hiding true rating, cheating...) that is entirely on them and they probably get what they deserve.

Honestly speaking, I once reported someone for racist comments in a forum post. That person wasn’t saying anything against me. He was having an intense argument with llama and Steven-o-dong. Llama eventually left the discourse for that guy's stupidity because he was mostly threatening Llama and Steven  that he will somehow find llama and Steven and beat them irl or something idk. I forgot. However, later on he started attacking Steven with racial slurs and explicitly expressing that according to his deduction Steven is black (not sure how he reached that conclusion) which he thinks is a bad thing or something. Funny thing is that the guy himself was from India LMAO. Anyway, I took the screenshots and sent email to support. Within two days, I received a reply in my email that they took care of him. I checked and found that the guy's account was permanently banned for abuse.

So yeah, the point is that I had a positive experience from reporting racial abuse/attacks. However, it was couple of months ago. I am not sure how they deal with it now.

Thank you for sharing your experience - I really hope that is what most people experience. Is there any specific reason why there are no options to allow for screenshots when reporting abuse?

Instead of directly reporting the person by using the report button, if you report them manually via email address, you can insert the screenshots in attachments of emails.

Vincidroid

Here : If you scroll below the page, you will find options of sending screenshots
