Penalty for abandoning game

Since it is rude to abandon a game instead of resigning, shouldn’t there be a point difference in how one leaves a game?

The rating system is designed to reflect past performances and a loss, is a loss. Removing additional points skews the rating system.

There already are restrictions placed on accounts bc that do it too often.

Yeah give them a big Q as their flair for a week

I just played a game where my opponent abandoned after 1 move. this was the second game we played ( I won the 1st, they wanted a rematch). The ELO adjustments were +7 win or -9 lose for me ... I'm pretty sure my opponent lost 32 ELO when they abandoned ... is this penalty new -- am I mistaken?

I was playing a 30-minutes game. About 3 minutes in the game the player started to ask me for a remis. We just started and I already had a good position, so I refused. After hitting the remis-button like a madman the player just left. Now I'm sittig in front of my computer watching the minutes counting down. This happens all the time and it's infuriating. I can't even start another game. I wish there where measures to stop this kind of behaviour. And asking for a remis this early in the game, just because it's not going like you planned, shoudn't be possible neither.

its my time on my side of the board isn't it ?????? and if i continue to play or sit and stew over my last stupid move or maybe after one min of looking at the board it comes to me about one last move - i have the right ? to do that don't i -- i have the same rights here or at least i thought i did as the next player-- i understand on a long game that some players just play out last moves slowly to frustrate the other player maybe if they talk to that player and show him where he went wrong using that time for constructive criticism of the game -- it would make the experience better for all --don't you think ??- if you are in a hurry to get to the next game for more points -- then its sad that you can't smell the roses for the coffee grinds in the garden of chess- but then i am not in hurry to do anything -- except lose the next game seeing how someone totally beats the stuffing out of me

I think you misunderstood what I meant (sorry for my english): 1. The opponent just left. As I understand the polite thing to do would be to resign or to finish the game. 2. It was a 30-minutes game. Who wants to play fast should chose an other option. And anyway: If I'm playing too slow, I'm gonna loose by the clock. 3. This seems to be a way to win points easily: You win points with a remis. Just leave and if the other player doesn't want to sit out the remaining time and leaves too, the game will be a remis. Looking at the statistics of the opponnent showed a lot of remis, some wins and very few losses. My conclusion: This is cheating.

MrLlamaDrama
I encounter this situation every day, and it is undoubtedly frustrating and unfair. Approximately 20-25% of my games are affected, which is not a marginal statistic.

I report every time this happens, but I feel that the reporting system is ineffective. Why do so many players abandon games without facing any consequences? @chess.com could consider implementing an indirect penalty for this issue, such as allowing a certain number of abandoned games within a specific time frame. If a player exceeds that limit, they could face a suspension. Imagine if, in a classical chess tournament, players simply walked away from the board because they didn't like a move; that would be unacceptable.

In my opinion, integrity is not just about not using Stockfish to play; it also involves behaving in a respectful manner.

I sometimes block people who abandon games instead of resigning. it is poor form - but if I'm honest I do it too on rare occasions when I'm particularly frustrated. I aim to do better, but I'm human.

There should be a point difference for abandoning the game.

think so I but think it is a bit too harsh like abort but opponents do but that annoyed (on purpose not because of wifi)
