At the very least don't give the power to silence someone to the topic creator.

Then people could continue to harass and communicate with people who blocked them

i think the modern definition of free speech is you are free to experience the consequences of your speech.

I agree that freedom of speech should be allowed on the forums. However I think the topic creator should have an option to set a minimum rating for people chatting on their forum posts, because it belongs to them and blocking everyone might take too long. Like if you are talking about something about chess, you might want to set a minimum rating of 500 if it's complicated

Any 'topic creator' (also known as 'opening poster' or OP) can block anybody at all at any time for any reason.
And that is a form of freedom of speech.
Somebody doesn't like that?
Nobody is forced to read in any forum.
Everybody is allowed to open their own forums (if they're not muted).
-------------------
How does the notion get started that people should have their blocking options taken away from them?
It seems to start with a false notion that anytime somebody opens a forum then that forum 'belongs' to the people who are blocked - which they try to disguise as 'belongs to everybody'.
It doesn't. They don't.
-----------
Besides false notions though there's another factor.
Some are very sensitive. Including young children.
Many might misinterpret blocking as an 'attack'.
Its not.
People have a right to protect their forums and their message box and a right to choose who they get challenges from.
And that's why chess.com so often recommends (when there's a problem) to block or to block and report.
Its the right to block that 'belongs to each and every member'.
Its as basic a thing as the right to lock your door and your car.

OP is "original poster" btw

@vamsim7
Original or opening poster. There's a big difference? You looked it up?
You haven't seen the term 'opening poster' before?
I've seen it many times.
Anyway - my post changed while you were quoting.
--------------------
Besides false notions about blocking though there's another factor.
Some are very sensitive. Including young children.
Many might misinterpret blocking as an 'attack'.
Its not. But blocking is often 'unpopular' and is a loaded subject.
And unfortunately some people with good intentions don't get it that its a bad idea for anybody's forum to be at the mercy of anybody else.
That often leads to people being intimidated out of their blocking options -
which in turn leads to another problem of admin teams or moderators having to then come in where the opening poster could have handled it himself/herself.

Some people want to separate themselves from others, perhaps feeling special. You can be good at a sport, game, or any skill, but what makes you truly great is understanding others. You can have high scores, riches or many things, and it is not salvation. I saw people breaking trophies and, one day, I breaked my trophies too. After that, now ,I see all achievements as a sign and testimony of own effort. It is not a simple demonstration of victory... Think of the greatest, Pacquiao, Muhammad Ali...Messi...Them also losed some times.About scores or high rank as sign of progress, the history of USA champion James Walter Braddock is exemplary. He inspired the movie Cinderella Man, 2005,by Ron Howard and protagonist Russel Crow. The Boxer Champ Oleg Alexandrovich Maskaev (Олег Александрович Маскаев ), Kazajistan, and posteriorly USA Citizen, also is a example that you can lose and stand up again many times

Terminology.
Ban. Mute. Block.
Ban refers to 'out of chess.com completely'
Mute refers to 'can't post anything or send messages and all previous posts and messages disappear'.
Block refers to individual rights of posters to stop whoever posting in their forums and sending messages and chess challenges to them.
Situation:
Chess.com isn't going to ban or mute anybody because they have a low rating.
There's also the term 'petition'.
Chess.com isn't going to take away people's blocking options because that would destroy the site immediately. That would be chaos.
Situation: this forum appears to be a counter to the other forum trying to get people 'banned or muted'. That's very unlikely to happen. But this forum seems to be a good idea anyway. I unfollowed that other forum.

GodOfFleas

I honestly don't know what this thread is about anymore. OP should jump in and clarify.

Also, terminology: This is a thread/topic within a forum, the forum being the "Community" forum.
