You seem to be mistaking criticising bad writing, for outrage. I'm not sure why. Let me make it simpler: my reaction is not "😡", it's "🙄".

The site would like it but they can't make that decision since it's a licensing issue (and potentially a cost related to it).

The issue is the name used and the images for the player(s).  The algorithms, as far as I know, are not covered under the license.

Sure, they could add some other bots with different names, pictures and bios, but then that isn't Beth Harmon

Just make a new bot, copy Beth's AI settings, and cleverly get around it by naming her "Barth Herman."

Change the pfp by giving her oversized sunglasses.

Or "Betty" or "Liz" - or use blonde hair. Beth was a redhead in Netflix, but a brunette in the novel.

But changing all the details, even if its the same settings for the engine, isn't Beth and people would still say, "bring back Beth" ....

Perhaps so.  The character was widely admired in the chess community.  And the bots were fun to play.
