Hi @erik is there some difference in desktop? Because using Chrome for Android when one taps the save/share button nothing happens other than saving the list. No extra popup or menu or interface or anything happens. So how is this "share button any different from the save button?
Fixing New Analysis
@erik when I told customer support they said it should not be like this and the developers were "repairing" the button
Hey all. Save and Share are the same. It saves it... so you can share it. We will try to make this more clear somehow...
Erik -
I think the underlying problem is the lack of consistency between the analysis page users see when re-directed from a completed game:
vs a blank analysis page:

Then on top of that you've got the old "triangle" share icon...
So you've got a couple things called "share" (the triangle and the new button) and you've got buttons that are both similar in placement and appearance with different names, and different functions, making any discussing of a "share" button even more confusing

I found out that there is a new share button on the Analysis Board page. When you press it it generates a url and puts it in clipboard memory to use. However this "share" button in the Analysis Board cannot be seen if one is viewing with an Android internet browser of any type. Here is the link to the forum post on this issue https://bit.ly/2M9Xxmf
@erik on a laptop when one has pasted a pgp into the Analysis Board and clicked the load button....then 2 buttons appear...."run report" and underneath that this new "share" button. When one presses it a green bar at the top flashes saying something to the effect that a unique url to share has been placed in the clipboard. HOWEVER on an Android browser like Chrome for Android or Firefox for Android one sees no "share" button whatsoever. In Chrome if I force "desktop site" view then I can see this new "share" button. On Firefox for Android one cannot see this "share" button in normal mobile web view or "desktop site" view. I have sent screenshots to support so they can fix this.
@erik I tend to agree with @mgt3 in terms of overkill with respect to "share" functionality on the Analysis Board. One actually already had a unique url share facility. When one clicked or tapped the universal share icon (the < sign) one got to this screen:
So there was already a way to easily get a unique url.
And this is what my Analysis Board looks after I have loaded a pgn into it. As you can see....no "share" button showing. I have reported this to membersupport@chess.com to have fixed:

@erik I tend to agree with @mgt3 in terms of overkill with respect to "share" functionality on the Analysis Board...
Please don't put words in my mouth. I do not think the new share function is "overkill". In fact, I think it's a great new addition. What I'm doing is lobbying for consistency between the blank analysis page and the page you get to when re-directed from a completed game. The layout and functionality of one should be the same as the other...

@jas0501 yup correct! The save button in the game analysis tab of a game analysis is now correctly saying "save" again....as it should...that is all it does
. It is TOTALLY different to this "Share" Button in the Analysis Board
I can see where the confusion has arisen.
The "Share" button is this button on the Analysis Board (found in the learning section of the site) that when clicked on copies the unique url for that Analysis Board session into the clipboard of one's device....so one can paste this url into a mail or elsewhere (a word doc etc). Clicking it reloads the Analysis Board with all the correct pgn data that made up that Analysis board session. So no need to repaste and reload a pgn all over again from scratch. I actually have a word doc with the urls of all my important Analysis Board Sessions I have done in the past...and I started doing this before any "share" button was added, as there is already a way to copy this unique url to one's device clipboard...as I highlighted in post #390.
Personally I think adding this "share" button in the Analysis Board is overkill and will even be confusing for many. That green bar with the message of what it does flashes by in a second! I thought the current way it is already implemented is clear and clever and user friendly. There is the universal "copy" icon to the right of the url that one just clicks or taps to load the url into clipboard memory. One could, if one wanted to really make it clear, have a heading above the url window saying "unique url for sharing or Analysis Board Session Reloading". Just an idea.
@mgt3 I wasn't trying to put any words in your mouth. Clearly I read your explanations and inferences differently to how you intended them to be understood. I must however respectfully disagree with you on a number of points. Trust me I am all for consistency when it is called for and logical. The 2 boards can never be mirror images of each other as they function differently.
In the game analysis the analysis is already done by the time you click the analysis tab...so one can't have a "run report" button...as there is nothing to run. The analysis is done! But as you add annotations, or add extra engine variations or retry variations etc one has to "save" these changes to the analysis game list. Therefore having the button at the end called "Save" makes perfect logical sense.
Now the Analysis Board. That starts out as a blank slate! There is no automatic analysis of any game. One pastes a fen or pgn, then loads it. Then one.....runs the analysis oneself by pressing the "run report" button. The naming of that button also already makes perfect sense. You are running an analysis report.
So on the whole I think both sections are very well thought out. I have stated my views however on the "share" button in the Analysis Board in post #392. Naturally we are both entitled to our opinions. At the end of the day ease of use and logic must prevail and things must be easy to use and understand. But often one cannot force uniformity if the processes start at different points.
Best Move diff colors re-implemented. This, as mentioned, suffers from the fact that one can not see the move classification on any move with a 0.00 move diff value. For example in game https://www.chess.com/a/s8YbT8zgQPk there are numerous moves with no hover annotations:

The move classification icons on the Score graph are still missing. Can anyone give justification for not implementing the proposal for the enlarged icons being displayed on the Score graph, white's above the axis and black's below, as shown below in the proposed implementation?

The only minor issue is the obscuring of the graph, however the graph is also available on the Report tab and an on/off toggle could be provided on the Score graph.. The numerous arguments for displaying the move classification icons as proposed have been stated previously.
Can anyone present arguments against the proposed implementation?
@erik thank you for changing the orange "share" button back to "save"...which is the logical choice. I appreciate this.
Then on to the move quality classification icons and the bars that are now coloured on the Best move Diff graph. PLEASE PLEASE can you reconsider what you have done here @erik. Here are my logical reasons and arguments for your consideration:
1. Functional problem with the Best Move Diff Graph not being able to show all move quality instances: I originally found out and showed with an example, and a@jas0501 has backed me up and also pointed out as well and also showed with his own example, that a 0.00 score gets no bar therefore no indication of any move quality classification for that move can be shown! Take this snapshot of a game I just played. Look at all the "best moves" hidden because there is no bar being shown!:
Here is the game. There are even more examples in this game where this problem occurs. I just highlighted a few: https://www.chess.com/daily/game/231893144
Thus @erik the "Best Move Diff" Graph is not the best place to show the move quality classifications as this graph CANNOT physically show ALL the move quality classifications for ALL the moves because of the shortcomings of this graph, as stated above. If you want to leave the bars coloured fine...it adds some added value for the moves that get a bar, but it isn't the right choice to make. I agree 100% with @jas050. It's completely logical.
2. The placement of move quality icons on the score graph: here I agree 100% with @jas0501 that the logical and correct choice is to put the move quality icons back on the score graph as you can show it for each and every move!...with white's icons just above the horizontal axis and black's just below the horizontal axis. It looked PERFECT how you originally had it. It means you can show EVERY MOVE'S QUALITY CLASSIFICATION, even when the score is 0.00 as the icon just goes in the blank space where the bar would be!
@erik the little move quality classification icons looked fine on the score graph as it was originally launched. Even on my Samsung Note 5 I could make out everything clearly and it all made perfect sense. The graph was not noisy or busy at all. Guys at chess.com I implore you to stop second guessing yourselves! Your idea was magic.
I believe they should be this size (as they were):
Sorry @jas050 in this instance I have to disagree with you on your idea to make the icons bigger, as portrayed in your second graph. BUT I 100% SUPPORT YOU that they need to live on the score graph ![]()
@jas050 the bigger icons in your second graph are now all squashed up together in your proposed look. These icons spill on to and over the other move's bars. The icon needs to sit neatly WITHIN the move bar so that one knows it is related to that move. In your second graph where the icons have been made bigger it is VERY difficult to make out what icon belongs to what move as the icons spill over into the bars on either side of the icon.
So in conclusion @erik please consider my logical unemotional facts I have presented to you… for putting the move quality classification icons back on the score graph. Please don't second guess yourself and your great decisions and ideas.
I realize you are looking for ways to improve the analysis experience but removing the icons from the score graph is not the way to go about it, in my opinion. Look for NEW VALUE. You have mentioned investigating a deeper analysis option. This is the kind of enhancement that adds more value!!
@erik I just want to say I appreciate the facts that you are looking for ways to improve and build value to the site and the whole "analysis" experience. Hence your "share" idea. But the team needs to look more deeply for utility and "meaty" tangible benefits. Here is a tangible idea:
Why not create a "library" or "archive" of past performed Analysis Board sessions? Right now I have to save that unique url to an excel document so that I can go back later and click the url to bring back up that past Analysis Board session/study. With a dedicated archive on the site one could incorporate filters as well in the archive by date, alphabetical listing etc. Right next to the clickable Archive Reference to the Analysis Board session you could have an icon to share that board immediately as well (to e mail or social media sites etc)....without even needing to open that Analysis Board Session. One could be given the option to give an Analysis Board Session reference name a new name too if one wasn't happy with the default one initially given etc etc.
This is the kind of tangible usable meaningful value users and members would, I believe, find value in.

The proposed setup with the re-positioned enlarged icons was a manually cobbled together and the sizing and positioning can be a little bit off as presented. The key point of the proposal was White's above the axis and Black below. By doing so it is very easy to see who owns what icon,.The key advantage.: the icons above the axis tell the story of white's game, at a glance, the icons below tell Black's story. The old way the stories are intertwined. For example, it would be hard to easily discern that while White made 3 weak moves in a row Black responded with 3 excellent moves as shown below:
The new arrangement would take a little getting use to, but ultimately would convey a crisper story of the game.
As to enlarging the icons, once positioned alternately above and below the axis there is space between each move the width of the bar. My clumsy presentation attempted to use the available space to increase the size as they are quite small. The up-sizing could be fine tuned,. Regardless the icon would be precisely positioned i.e. bar centered.
@jas0501 thanks for clearing that up. I now understand you perfectly! I think your idea is actually quite clever, regardless of how big the icons are....putting white's move above the horizontal axis, and black's just below. It will certainly add the advantage vs the original implementation, that now at a glance even on the score graph one can discern which was a move by white and which was a move by black and it's quality instantly. Clever! The icon just needs to line up with the score bar or "move position" if the score is 0.00. But that is something the dev team can easily do in design phase.
For those users who don't want to see any icons there could be a simple toggle switch called "show move quality icons". So the guys who just want a simple score graph can toggle them off.
At least with your idea one gets to see the move quality coloured icons for ALL moves, and one sees instantly which were moves by black and which by white. So well done on a clever idea!
@erik please consider this novel clever idea by @jas0501. As I have said....just making the bars in the "Best move diff" graph colored doesn't account for all the 0.00 moves that get NO BAR! (I am repeating myself here aren't I
ad nauseam!
It's just that I believe we are correct in our thinking and approach).
@eric If you don't like the idea of white's icons just above the axis and black's below...well then I implore you to just put the icons back the way they were as you launched the great idea....on the score graph (and consider the toggle switch).
