Asking for a hint during a puzzle should not make you lose the full amount of points as if you got it wrong. If you only ask for one hint and not again for the move, and you get it right, you should only lose a small amount of points compared to getting it completely wrong. Otherwise what's the point of hints? Might as well just remove the option since we lose the same amount of points as if we got it wrong, may as well just guess and have it show the solution that way. Yet ironically when you get a puzzle wrong midway, it sometimes gives you points for getting the first few moves right. Both of this is absurd, they got it backwards.
The hint works the same as if you guessed wrong. So, if it's a multi-move puzzle that gives partial credit and you use the hot in a layer move, you'll still get the partial credit.
I believe there are some plans on changes around the way that works, but don't know when changes are happening. Also, don't know the specifics on all the planned changes.
