I completely agree, I was going to start a thread myself until I saw this. Can we please get the puzzle system back from a year ago, what is there now is just useless. I've always done a lot of puzzles on the day I play OTB games, and for the last few months I had to do it on Lichess, because what we have here just isn't serviceable.
I genuinely don’t see the reason this feature was added. Why was it added? They might argue that some people want a more challenging or easier puzzle experience, but that’s what Custom Puzzles are for. That’s not what Rated Puzzles should be. You shouldn’t be able to farm rating by clearing a bunch of easy puzzles… I’ve literally gotten 30-streaks several times and even once got a 50-streak. Luckily, this hasn’t hit the iOS app yet. But I’m assuming they’ll postpone adding useful features to the iOS app to help it catch up, to add this.
I’m assuming there’s a huge business play behind this to make them more money, but I don’t see it… Companies are a joke sometimes.
I feel like this got some decent traction and Chess.com still hasn't even acknowledged the community is unhappy with this change.
I switched to Lichess puzzles and am thinking about cancelling my Chess.com membership when it goes to renew in a few months. The only thing I'm really paying for now is Game Review? For what? I can just download an engine or use Lichess.
I like this new update. It is a really good addition to being able to change the difficulty in my opinion.
I agree with all the complaints here. Put back the old system--puzzle difficulty increased if you're rating increased, with a lot of randomness too. My rating was meaningful. Now it's useless, and I'll be looking for another chess site soon.
I absolutely agree, my puzzle rating has shot up because of the lower rated puzzles, which is not an accurate reflection of my level, nor can I compare that to my past puzzle performance. You can only get 5 points for a correct puzzle, but lose 30 for an incorrect one! They need to change this back or the premium membership is not worth it.
I also am very disappointed with these recent changes.
I got the chess.com app on my mobile phone roughly a year ago. Unfortunately I don't really have the time to play against other people, but it's quickly become a fun little routine of mine to do my 3 daily puzzles (or more when I felt like it) and the current puzzle of the day.
For the past couple months I had been stuck at around 1900-2050 puzzle rating, never quite managing to stay past the 2000 threshold for long. But I enjoyed doing it and I enjoyed watching my progression as time went on. I remember half a year ago I had hit a similar wall at ~1600 puzzle rating.
Now with these new changes my puzzle elo just jumped from 2000 to 2800 almost effortlessly within the last week.
And I have to admit this has significantly negatively impacted the enjoyment I get out of doing puzzles. I have completely lost the ability to gauge my actual progression rate and that sense of improvement is now gone.
In short: my fun daily chess puzzle routine is not fun anymore.
Please, please, revert these changes. I like the idea behind custom difficulty puzzles, but this should be kept separate from rated puzzles.
So-called "extra hard" is giving me extremely easy puzzles (500+ points lower than my rating) almost every time. My rating is generally 2500-2700 and my last 15 puzzles have all been under 2000.
What is the point of this?
Time to move to Chess Tempo. This is garbage.
If you haven't noticed, you now can go to the website and select a puzzle difficulty. This setting isn't in the app yet and the easiest difficulty is the default used there. Chosing a higher setting will probably increase the difficutly a bit, but your described problems will likely remain the same. @Nef_uwu
Indeed, I got the exact same problem. Even on "extra hard" the average puzzle rating is 800-1000 below my puzzle rating. @maybe_matt
Why being able to choose your difficulity of puzzles makes people mad about it? It's a great addition.
Maybe not for some people but you can't be mad about it.
Well, it's not just people not liking the changes, but the system is currently objectively broken. For example wikipedia writes: "A rating is an evaluation or assessment of something, in terms of a metric (e.g. quality, quantity, a combination of both,...)."
How the puzzle system currently works, the puzzle rating is no rating anymore, as you can just grind your "rating" as high as you want. Most people used the puzzle rating to estimate their tactical strength. After the recent changes this is no longer possible.

How is it broken? It works completely good, harder and better than the old system.
I just described you one aspect of why it is broken, but you also could read the previous two pages or some of the many other threads regarding this issue, to get a more elaborate view.

I just noticed. That's not a problem for me, I like it. But being able to change it to something higher would be good and would make sense.
I still like being able to solve puzzles in the 1500-2000 range, just like a warm-up.

It literally does not. At all. Exactly the opposite, in fact.
After the recent changes, even people with an equal rating and setting get differently rated puzzles. That's another aspect that is criticized. I, for an example, frequently get puzzles rated at 1-1.2k with a puzzle rating of 3k, if the standard difficulty is selected.
But I have also seen people rated 800 get puzzles rated at >2.4k or people rated 4k get puzzles below 1k, continuously. The whole system is a complete mess currently.

Yeah. They’ve been doing that for 8 years with Conditionals and multiple premoves on iOS, with them being absent there. It’d take basically no time to add, and they have been “on the roadmap” for years now, and I think at this point, it’s an invalid excuse and they just don’t care. Luckily, people are advocating for it, though. (Oops, I went on a rant there, I’m sorry.)
Moving on to this topic, It’s the same with this, except it’s the opposite. They add a feature that basically everyone hates, and doesn’t listen when people clearly don’t like it, and I just have no idea why. Chess.com doesn’t really add the features their users want. They add the features that will make them rich.
It was so much fun the way it was, a mix of difficult and easier/easy puzzles. Now you have to choose and it's always the same level. I was addicted to the puzzles, but think I will unsubscribe because now it is very boring. I also agree with the arguments about the meaninglessness of the rating. Please change it back to the way it was!!
