I woke up this morning, made some scrambled eggs, and opened Chess.com like I always do. But when I hovered over the “chess.com” menu, instead of seeing my notifications, I saw a message that said, “This menu has moved.”
Just like that, we’re faced with another UI update that feels both unwanted and unnecessary. The site has made navigating the forums and the social side of Chess.com in general more difficult than it should be. You can only see about ten notifications at a time now, which means that often, it’s quicker to manually search through threads to find what you missed. Having all notifications—daily games, messages, thread replies—available from one hover menu made perfect sense. This new layout doesn’t improve anything; it just disrupts a system that had been working fine for months.
Even when I try to look at it from the viewpoint of the average chess player, the change still doesn’t make sense. Daily games and challenges are harder to navigate, and the overall experience is pretty much the same as before, just more inconvenient.
Why does Chess.com keep changing things for its users with constant UI updates, especially when it’s clear they aren’t needed? This has happened several times in the past year alone, and each time it feels like change just for the sake of change.
PS: Yes, I know I’m late to the party on this update, but it’s still frustrating.
