Hello, Chess.com community!

I hope this post finds you all in good spirits and full of enthusiasm for the game we love. Today, I’d like to share an exciting idea that I have been discussing with the Chess.com team plus the Title Team: introducing new, non-FIDE titles to recognize a broader range of achievements within our community.

The Vision:

As you know, traditional chess titles such as GM, IM, and FM are awarded by FIDE and reflect a player’s performance in over-the-board tournaments. While these titles are prestigious, they primarily focus on classical gameplay. However, Chess.com offers a rich and diverse platform where players can engage with chess in various forms, including puzzles, lessons, and online gameplay.

With this in mind, we're exploring the possibility of creating new titles that celebrate achievements in these areas. These titles would not replace FIDE titles but would serve as additional recognition of skills and dedication within the Chess.com ecosystem.

Proposed Titles:

Here are some of the potential titles we're considering:

- *PM - Puzzle Master*: Awarded to players who consistently demonstrate exceptional skill in solving chess puzzles. This title could be based on a combination of puzzle ratings, the number of puzzles solved, and performance in puzzle rush events.

- *LM - Lesson Master*: Given to users who excel in completing lessons and courses on Chess.com. This title would recognize a commitment to learning and improving through our educational resources.

-*OLM - Online Legend Master*: Recognizing players who achieve high ratings and exceptional performance in online matches. This title would focus on achievements in various time controls and formats, from blitz to bullet.

- *CM - Contributor Master*: Celebrating those who contribute significantly to the Chess.com community, whether through forum posts, creating content, or helping others improve their skills.

- *TM - Tournament Master*: Awarded to players who consistently perform well in Chess.com’s online tournaments, demonstrating strategic prowess and competitive spirit.

Why These Titles Matter

- *Recognition and Motivation*: These titles would provide recognition for achievements beyond classical play, motivating players to explore different aspects of chess.

- *Inclusivity*: By acknowledging various skills and contributions, we create a more inclusive environment where all types of chess engagement are valued.

- *Community Engagement*: Titles like CM (Contributor Master) encourage community interaction, fostering a supportive and vibrant environment.

Implementation:

I've had numerous discussions with the Title Team, and I'm thrilled to report that they are excited and supportive of implementing these new titles. Here's what we're envisioning for the implementation process:

- *Criteria Development*: Establish clear and fair criteria for each title, ensuring they are challenging yet attainable.

- *Title Verification*: Titles should be awarded based on verifiable achievements, and our system will ensure authenticity without tying titles to any membership plans.

- *Feedback and Iteration*: We want to involve the community in refining these ideas. Your feedback will be invaluable as we move forward, so please share your thoughts and suggestions!

Conclusion

The introduction of new titles is an exciting opportunity to broaden the ways we celebrate chess achievements on Chess.com. It aligns with our mission to make chess accessible and rewarding for everyone, regardless of how they choose to engage with the game.

I’d love to hear your thoughts on these ideas. What titles would you like to see? How do you think they should be awarded? Your input will be crucial in shaping this initiative, so please join the conversation!

Thank you for being such an amazing community, and I look forward to seeing how these new titles can enrich our shared chess experience.

Best regards,

Joseph Reid.

This is a very amazing idea, but if someone already has an existing title, where do they put the new custom titles?

Actually, this is a good point. Maybe, it's just for 'non-titled' players? Or have it separate from their official FIDE title on their account/profile

Yes, I totally agree.

If something like that was implemented, it would likely be a banner I would think.

Yeah, absolutely.

After talking about it with the title team, they said to put it on my profile. But, IMO it looks a little naff because everyone can put whatever they want.

I feel like this would be a great idea. but with puzzles, wouldn't that title just encourage more engine users?
