566 it’s clear by now that it’s not the effort. They genuinely don’t want to ban new users from posting pictures. Who knows why. None of the decisions they make regarding forums and the social side of cc make any sense in general. It’s not clear whether it’s corporate greed or just them being f**lish for the joke of it.

That's not true. There was some code put in place a few weeks back in regards this but it ended up with some bugs and had to be turned off so it could be fixed

It was more complex than just account age but caught members that should not have been.

It should be back at some point.

Ah, I had never seen that before or heard about it prior to this topic. ...

Just reminded me of the 1 basic rule I had for sales teams, that they know enough about the product at least as much as the users. Should be part of onboarding training and post release training.

Don't know if that should apply to mods and staff, but just putting it out there.

The site is constantly updating so it's not really possible for everyone to see everything that exists or could have changed.

I'm aware of a lot of things but there are a lot of things I don't do on the site as well. I usually look for things that changed when I see mention of it as well or ask staff on other occasions (especially if I see more than one mention)

That's good to hear. At least they're trying

Yeah I mean "1 line of code" is an exaggeration, but it's a simple problem to solve. They're making it more complicated than it needs to be by adding additional variables to allow "legitimate new members" to post images. Like it's the end of the world if they don't allow them

Intention and competence are 2 important prerequisites to a solution. At least the intention part is getting better.

584 seriously, are they worried that new users will be offended that they aren’t instantly allowed to post images within 5 minutes of creating an account? No one would care, and most users would never even notice.

Like I was saying earlier, they should make it similar to Discord’s system where you have to earn your right to post pictures in a server. I would say something along the lines of a month old account and a week on the forums would be fine.

It would be an inconvenience. For the biggest troublemakers, that's all it would be and wouldn't stop anything.

BoardMonkey

The trolls would create a string of sleeper accounts.

Especially for our Dubai girls. Oh wait they don't post pictures yet

To catch a troll, you have to think like a troll. Chat, what's their next move going to be?

I see Meta is getting rid of its fact checking altogether - and they're an actual social media company https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2025/jan/15/meta-to-fire-thousands-of-staff-mark-zuckerberg-warns-of-intense-year

They had to get with the program of the current powers that be. Can't be left behind while Elon progresses.

Hiding images by default...

It would likely require a setting so members could disable it if they don't want to hide images by default, unless it only applied to accounts under a certain age.

Exactly! Give members the option to block links and images from certain people.

Add the option: "Block Images and Links" to the existing report/block features of the site.

Or at least offer it as an option in the general settings.

shadowtanuki

What would the point of that be? The person you want to block is someone who's just going to make a new account. If they're posting inappropriate images, then their account is going to get closed. That wouldn't do anything. If you know someone is posting bad images, then you don't have to look at them. One look is all you need, and blocking images after that isn't going to do anything about the first image, and all images you see from a user after that is on you, because you don't have to look at what you know is there. It wouldn't help. New user, new picture, new block, repeat. Not going anywhere.

shadowtanuki

You're still going to look anyway, and still be mad. Someone posts something, you want to see what it is, it's gross, you get mad. You're not going to be less mad, and the fact that you have to "choose to see it" isn't going to lessen the impact when someone post bad stuff. People will still see everything, and then back at square one with a solution that didn't solve anything.

It would help those that don't want to see certain images.

shadowtanuki

Honestly, who do you think that would be? Someone has to click on it to find out if it's bad or not, right? Who do you know who doesn't want to see what's behind door number one? If you already know the user is posting bad things, then just report the one you saw. You can scroll the screen so you don't have to look at it.

shadowtanuki: offers a practical suggestion (take responsibility for what you see on chess.com, because you know what the mod limitations are)

everyone else: doesn't want to hear it
