What is WebGL and when did this start?

I can’t get to my daily games or vote chess games.  When I try I get either an empty screen or a chess board in the starting position, not my in-progress games.  I also get an error message that my browser (Safari) doesn’t support WebGL so some of my settings won’t work.  What is WebGL and why was I able to see my in-progress games earlier today?  Is WebGL a new thing that requires me to change browsers?  

What version of Safari? Did you make any changes to the browser or install any add-ons/plugins?

Also, you might try clearing your browser cache to see if that get the message to go away.

If not, could you post a screenshot of the error?

No I didn;t make any changes or install anything.  I have now tried thew most recent Chrome and am currently on Edge.  The same thing happens on all of them.

Same for me, since a half hour too. Same problem on Firefox or Chrome, never had before.

i also have this problem i cant play online games, ranked puzzles and play agaisnt friends when i try to play a game it says "WebGL is not supported by your browser, so some of your Piece or Animation Type settings are ignored" and a red empty text bazr shows up on top of the screen. I can watch live chess without problems.

Staff are looking into it now.

I have the same problems on my familly acounts, (chrome browser).

There are game bugs - figures disappears, wring size orientation, cannot move figures etc.

same issue on my side MacBook Air M1 - Safari browser. 

Same problem on Chrome, downloaded the latest version to be sure but exactly what Unlocking Minds described. On Iphone with safari no notification but nothing loads, when i try to find an opponent it just displays a red bar on the top but no message (like when you get the green bar that says you're now friends with someone).
