Why Players With Higher Non-Daily Ratings Shouldn't Be Let Into Lower-Rated Daily Tournaments

A problem that sometimes occurs in daily tournaments comes in the form of 2000+ rated players. Say, a daily tournament was created where the restrictions disallowed anyone rated above, let's say, 1800. You get those people rated 1200, 1300, 900, and so on, but usually, there is one player among them, a wolf, in a lower-rated cloth. A 2000, whose daily rating has been unchanged for 3 years, where they sit at a comfortable 1650.

This player, while their intentions may be innocent, can singlehandedly mess up the entire tournament. As the lower-rated players fall under their superior skill, some players who may have had a chance to win had they been paired with someone of a lower rating, now have a loss on their record that seemed inevitable, given that the skill of that one 1650 is higher than almost anyone else placed in that tournament. Eventually, that 1650 rises to the top and takes first, not only taking first from someone else but shifting the entire leaderboard.

I'm sure you can see the problem, though it comes down to one issue; could this be considered a form of 'sandbagging'? While it may not be intentional, these players' daily ratings are much lower than the ratings in other time controls, so obviously they are of a higher skill than most people that match said rating.

I believe there should be some safeguards put into place, such as an option to make your daily tournament rating bracket ones of a different time control, in order to balance out this problem.

And no, I'm not saying those higher-rated players are despicable or anything, usually their lower daily rating is due to how slow daily games go, or how much they favor them.

Anyway, those are my thoughts, I'd love to hear yours

It's a really good post and reasonably topical for "enjoying" chess players like me.

I'm thinking that a minimum requirement, e.g. 200 games, might help a little. But it is one thing to write this "rule", something else is that you have to enforce it yourself, as unfortunately there is no "button" setting option that makes them be sorted out..

Can you get rid of the simple "King of a tournament" players? Unfortunately, I do not think so.

Agree completely , and I am currently playing a tournament where at least 2 players fall under this category .

There is a discussion going on in the comment section .
