I will in future. The americans are the worst. I find it quite objectionable and I am no prude. But a GAME of chess is not the place for the kind of language and threats. And yes I do have a sense of humour. Thank for your advice
I've seen a lot of people making this complaint, yet I've played 200 odd games just online, an' plenty of 'live' , but I've never encountered any abuse whatsoever on this site - bit of a shame really, cos I can sure as sugar give as good as I get

The legal action was a bit of a joke but there have been similair cases recently and it would be exposure for the game ( any publicity is good publicity). Make it look a bit more sexy

Blocked two already, will block every single one and if everyone did the same they would have no one to play. I get the message folks,I will deal with it, happy chessing.
pay no attention 2 em jus play ur game probabally jus sore lozers who cant compete tryin 2 ruin it for the better players

you're finding that a large number of the people who are being rude to you are americans? how often do you run into rude players and what types of games are you playing? are people being rude in online or live? i almost never run into rude people in online... maybe it's my sparkling personality.

thank you for all your advice, mostly on live chess, online you build more of a relationship and the chat becomes more and more amicable and real friendships develop. I have the situation under control now and know how to respond when abuse does occur but it was still a shock to hear an opening gambit suggesting I might like to do something to my mother! That one was a palestinian by the way.
Yes, I hear Americans are the worst at abuse. I find many players try to bait me and I pull a socratic irony on them by asking them if this is true of all Americans. Always they say that all Americans are like whatever insult du jour they are pulling out. I keep asking my 'aw shucks' questions, asking if they really believe the sterotypes they are laying out, but what I am waiting for is an actual threat of violence on this country. I expect it will happen, or has happened to someone, but it has yet to happen to me so I haven't had the pleasure of reporting anyone to the Secret Service.

I would agree that my comments are a generalization and are not intened as anti-american per se. It is only my initial discovery upon dipping my toe into the waters of online chess. I have many American friends and just despair at any uncivilized behaviour wherever it comes from. In general chessplayers are intellegent well-mannered people but a small minority spoil the fun for everyone, is'nt it the same in every sphere of life.
also send them screen clippings of it so they know what has been said

I have only been a member for a couple of months.The abusive messages are spoiling the fun I have discovered in playing chess again after a long gap. I like to chat with friendly people but if you disable the chat with an abusive player you just get a message with more abuse. How do I report this and what action is taken. A couple of these members were so bad I am considering legal action. This is a beautiful game and does not deserve to be dragged into the gutter.
