Achievements and Badges

It would be interesting to be able to obtain badges (or trophies) when certain events are accomplished that a player can work for.  For example:

The Sicilian - Obtained when winning three games using any of the sicilian defenses

The Queen Starts It All - Obtained when winning three games using three different queen's openings

The Tripple Stack - Obtained when causing your opponent to stack three pawns on the same file

These Pawns Don't Fall - Obtained when winning a game with at least 6 pawns left standing

I don't have a lot of time - Win a game in 10 moves or less

Why Have Just One - Obtained by promoting a pawn to a queen while already having a queen

This is just an example of some of the fun badges that could be obtained while at the same time encouraging folks to step out of their box and try some new openings and defenses.  The badges could be displayed on a page similar to or on the same page as the current trophies.  Also, you could use the same Alerts notification system to notify the player that they've achieved this.

You wouldn't want to have this retroactive, causing a huge datamine of old games, but use it to spice up new games going forward.

Some might view these as badges of honour - others as badges of dishonour.

MiltonVanderslice

They could be both and still be in the same spirit of the game.  It wouldn't take much to have a setting to turn these off if the user is bothered by such things.

I like this idea. It's the unusual positions and outcomes in chess that make it interesting and it would be nice to have them noted/rewarded.

I almost made a move in a game recently just because it would have left four pawns in a 2 x 2 square. Two white vs two black.

Just because i thought it looked neat!

"I don't have a lot of time - Win a game in 10 moves or less"

My experience has shown that the above should be revised to:

I don't have a lot of time- Having enough time to start a thread about not having a lot of timeLaughing

tanishq91

that would be a lot of trophies to hand out

MiltonVanderslice

It would be a lot of trophies, and some would have the goal of collecting all of them.

In fact a leader board of earned trophies would be a fun competition overall, between groups, and between friends.

Where is the Bongcloud trophy?

MiltonVanderslice

Since Chess.com is working hard on in Facebook integration, it would be fun to have these pushed back to a users Facebook stream.  It could lead to a lot of click throughs by Facebook friends who could start to see that there are interesting tidbits to a chess game besides achieving mate.

I don't know, some people might not want all of their friends to know just how much of a chess geek they are.

But for those of us that have waaaay less than 50 friends, they already knowLaughing

MiltonVanderslice

:) understood.  The option to turn off the Facebook streaming as well as trophies all together would be a needed feature.

However, I know that my group of friends would love to talk about the game where we earned the King's No Coward trophy where you achieve mate by using the King as a supporting piece.  But that's the kind of geeks I roll with.

How about opening with the king? 1. e4 e5 2. Ke2!!

Categorizing these would make sense

Openings - for different opening types

End Games - different types of mates

Locations - stuff like playing people from different places such as 1 from each continent

General - stuff like winning your 500/1000/5000/10000 point

Seems to me that this would devalue chess by throwing in a bunch of pointless stuff. Achievements and badges are for video games, not chess. If you get some kind of cool or weird position, then go ahead and post it, but the objective is checkmate, and adding others, especially if they come with cute little badges and moderately clever names, will pollute the ancient Game of Kings and reduce it to a childish timekiller warranting no greater respect or study than Bloons Tower Defense 2.

totally agree :) we just need to come up with all of them and then create the trophies for them! (and improve our trophy section.) but i totally agree!

They could be used as a marker: avoid playing anyone who brings the game into disrepute by receiving them.

LordStannis

I think these trophies should be given out only when you beat someone of equal or higher rating because it would be easy to get trophies when your playing someone that's 400 points lower than you. Make it a challenge!!!  Personally I would prefer it to be at least 200 points above the individuals rating but that is just me.
