Change in news functionality

no, I'm saying rather than go forward with this slow, painful implementation of V3 on chess.com, the developers should field test on chesskids.com first, THEN when the kids are happy, have the developers say, "OK, we think we're ready for V3 on chess.com, let's have a test-run .. on a mirror site like chess-test.com or whatever".  Let the premiere and admin players field test the beta site.  THEN and only then, bring it to the primary site of chess.com.

I think key is to exempt News Alert from "ignore all" just like friend's requests. Should be a small development effort.

The point is that match participation levels has dropped after April news change and some groups has stopped accepting open team matches.

ilmago

It seems to me that chess.com is currently working on the alert system.

Most recently observed indicator:

When one receives an alert for a received team match challenge, its link towards the view challenge page (where one can view the challenge and accept or decline the challenge) no longer works.

The only way to actually view a received team match challenge therefore now seems to be to manually try to find the team the challenge was for, manually go to its team match page, and use that to manually go to the page of that challenge.

This is for V2 --- so some recent change in alert programming seems to have freshly broken this alert aspect for team match challenges. I have not tested the same thing for V3 --- just as probably the programmer had not gotten around to testing the recent change for not breaking things in V2?

So of course hopefully programming of the alert system will continue, hopefully fixing things, and hopefully not breaking things.

edit: It appears that either this observation, mentioned here in this post,  has been only temporary, or occurs only in part of the possible cases (e.g. when the challenge has been created in V3?) or that it has already been fixed quickly in the meantime :-)

Chess.com has indeed changed and improved news-as-alert functionality, but as far as i know only if news are generated and viewed on V3?

We are hoping that news alert will be exempt from "ignore all" just like friends request and PMs, so members actually will open them (as they did before April change). When you are in many groups, you tend to get a flood of group notes alert.... of varying quality and usually less importance. Often after clicking a few of them, "ignore all" is used.

ltristam

We all have to understand V2 won't be here for long so we need to start using the place where the news function ACTUALLY works. Teams need to get used to the fact that V3 is the only place where they can get lots of players in matches with the awesome function. happy.png

Indeed ltristam I have made the switch to V3 and no longer have to look or return to V2. Not only the News only functions correctly in V3 but V2 will be slowly not supporting old V2 links and other parts of the old content. I recommend everybody to either switch to V3 ASAP or start using it as much as possible before V2 is just gone ?? IMO

For a while, I'll be having to post V2 & V3 links to the masses.. not knowing whether the Group or Club members will know which is which.  Undecided

Spacebux, for some kinds of links, V2 links are automatically forwarded to the correct place in V3, so posting only the V2 link works fine for these cases.

Chess.com need to get to one system asp. Too expensive supporting two.

..and news need to be exempt from "ignore" all, just like friend's requests and PMs

Indeed Joakim the sooner V2 leaves the better and faster everything will work. It is true most V2 links are auto forwarded in V3 so no conversion is needed & dual links should not be needed either. I have heard some V2 links and features will start going away soon.

The main thing now keeping V2 here is the amount of members that has complained in the past about V3. 6 months  ago I could not get everything I need to get done in V3 and had to go back and forth to V2. V3 is now much better and I can stay in V3 all the time. I'm starting to love V3 after just about a 5 day period just getting used to the differences.

The best way for all members help to get V2 removed and everything in V3 is to start using V3 full time. Erik has not removed V2 due to the complaints and tries his best to keep everybody happy. So let's all get over to V3 the more we get will help find the last few bugs as the programmers are looking to get V3 finalized. I assure you this is the time to start getting to know V3. After you get to know V3 you will never want to return to V2. Cheers everybody and you'll be loving V3 :)

BillPhilip

Indeed!

I only go back to V2 to copy different links to post in my interactions with the members of my clubs. Because lots of people are still using V2!

GCEDW2001

I am still in V2, and will stay in V2 until i am forced to go to V3.

JustADude80

Same here. I have tried v3. I don't like it. I have stated why and I see nothing that makes me think those things will be changed.

VirtualKnightJoakim

Let's go back to focus of this forum?

I think latest news changes are good, but news need to be exempt from ignore" all and ideally in their own section at top. They need to stand out from the frequent and random group notes alerts

I think you might have mentioned that before.

I agree with Riker, lots of people will be used to V2 but after spending enough time on v3 you will realise it's a better website.

Spacebux

But, many of us are not yet.  Many of us still cling to V2 precisely because of its advantages to V3.

🍦 ... just get used to strawberry ice cream.  You'll love it.  Once you see you get three scoops of ice cream compared to just one with chocolate, you'll see how much better it is.

Some might call it a straw man argument.  Others may go so far as to call it a straw man with a brown nose argument.  👍

VirtualKnightJoakim

I wonder how many admins routinely PM 100-400 members to remind them of a match? It just seemed less effort and more right to use news, but, as indcated in first post, we cannot do that at present for such a purpose as oneone see the news.

I look forward to switch to V3 so members can see the news improvements. I hope chess.com will follow up and make news exempt from "ignore all", just like friends request... and place them in a separate box above the many group notes alerts.

These are most likely the remaining pieces to make the as effective as before April change.

Robert_New_Alekhine

Due to the new functionality, I now often PM up to 30 people for a match. News was much easier.

What's the purpose of News if the number of people reading it is 0?

NightKingx

I agree with Virtual Knight Joakim

but there is more:

They say V3 is more orientated to help Adm manage their teams. This does the exact opposite thing. Why? I don't know. Now private messages are required, a complete waste of time...

I would even suggest making news not possible to disactivate. If I post news, everyone DOES get a notification. If some adm are just too abussive, well, maybe it is time people consider leaving the group. This may be to strong, but it is an idea.
