Not to mention that chess is a dull (you have to think) and difficult (same reason) game from the begining and putting emphasis in its bureaucratic characteristics isn't helping at all!
What is Dull / Difficult to you is "fun" for the rest of us (shocking, I know!)
Ratings are a very nice carrot to help people gauge their skill level and most of us would LIKE to see the result of the "study/learn/practice and get better" reinforcing loop via a growing rating number.
I think the "Improve your chess rating today!" slogan is a very lame way to make someone play chess online. Where's the fun element? Most people want to play chess for the fun it gives to the players. Not to mention that chess is a dull (you have to think) and difficult (same reason) game from the begining and putting emphasis in its bureaucratic characteristics isn't helping at all!
I guess though that the Chess.com managment team has a sound marketing reason for this decision.
