Chess.com Slogan

I think the "Improve your chess rating today!" slogan is a very lame way to make someone play chess online. Where's the fun element? Most people want to play chess for the fun it gives to the players. Not to mention that chess is a dull (you have to think) and difficult (same reason) game from the begining and putting emphasis in its bureaucratic characteristics isn't helping at all!

I guess though that the Chess.com managment team has a sound marketing reason for this decision.

What is Dull / Difficult to you is "fun" for the rest of us (shocking, I know!)

Ratings are a very nice carrot to help people gauge their skill level and most of us would LIKE to see the result of the "study/learn/practice and get better" reinforcing loop via a growing rating number.

erik

our slogan is:

play. learn. share.

those are the 3 things you do on the site. i'm not sure where you got the "Improve your chess rating today!" from...

@erik I'm talking about the homepage banner. Btw, I wasn't talking about what is the case for me but about what is the case for most people.

I would like to point out that it is also rewarding to see that you can win more times, beat players you weren't able to beat before, do things in the chessboard you weren't able to do before, and avoid mistakes that were just so easy to make in the past. This is a more meaningful way of enjoying the game. Ratings are just a bureaucratic tool that is supposed to facilitate competitive chess. Chess has its beauties in its own right.

Yuppi!!! The Homepage slogan of Chess.com reverted back to the traditional "Play Chess for FREE at the #1 Chess Site". It may be your average slogan but it's much more meaningfull and inspiring than the previous one! Congrats erik!

What's going on? The Chess.com Homepage has a cycling slogan !? or should I say "?!" ?

heinzie

chess.com - where chess meets waffles

erik

yes - it cycles so we can test which is most effective at conveying our message to new users :)

Flamma_Aquila

Chess.com... We create more mates than match.com and adultfriendfinder.com combined!

Chess.com... why not try pushing wood instead of pulling it?

TheGrobe

Chess.com... We've got more squares than any other site!

nxavar

It looks like Chess.com settled for the "Play Chess for FREE at the #1 Chess Site!" slogan.

nxavar

Nope. It still cycles.

How can "Improve Your Chess Rating Today!" appeal to beginners that most probably don't have a clue about what a chess rating is? (There is one? Really?) This slogan has the most possibilities to be successful among serious amateurs. Come to think of it, these people are that will probably stick with the site and probably buy some subscription. So business-wise this slogan is very good. As I wrote in my first post that started the thread there was probably some sound marketing reason behind this very lame slogan and here it is, I found it! No big surprise that I found it, since I spent 4 years of my life studing this stuff Surprised. Anyway, I think that this "marketing analysis" is good for the general audience. It's good to understand what's going on around you even if it is none of your business Laughing.

Yes, but one could make the argument that a site like this will turn a rank beginner or occasional player into that serious amateur.

Yes, but the "rank beginner or occasional player" won't get it. Better come play first, see what all this is about, and hey, the first thing they will notice will be a changing number next to their name :) I didn't know what ratings were either until I came to this site. So no offence to chessplayers that don't have a clue about  ratings. I didn't even know that you can actually "develop" as a chess player. But anyway, if this site doesn't want to appeal more to beginners it has a right to do so. After all it's a business and it has to make money Wink.
