Ahhh, the Joe McCarthy argument...

For everyone else...there's no point in arguing this, really.  There's no way in heck that chess.com would implement this.

The idea of entering a credit card number will deter new users. No one will come to a site they've never been to and create an account only to find out they need a credit card.

THANK YOU for saying that so much more concisely than how I said it! That's definitely a skill I need to learn in the future.

Macer; I'm talking about a list that chess.com thinks could be cheating, by a preponderance of the evidence. One accusation wouldn't put you on the list, but numerous accusations would.

Rsava; the company can prove its legit with the terms of use clause.  On a side note, let me say thank you to everyone in this thread. We're posting 80 post in 80 minutes. The mod board must be lighting up like a christmas tree. One more opinion. there's about 7 million people on this site. HOW MANY are actually cheating a lot??

No they can't. If I have a signed CC slip with a swiped card it is very easy to say it is a legit charge. If I have a charge from a punched in CC, very hard to prove the person actually made the charge. Banks are even questioning "IP address of the user" becasue those can be spoofed also.

If it is a charge because "they broke the terms of the user agreement" then it is VERY difficult to prove to be legit.

"How did they break the terms?"

"They cheated."

"Do you have proof?"

"Well, our algorithm says they were."

"Well, they say they weren't. Can you PROVE it?"

"No, but we're pretty darn sure ......."

I think Eric's lawyers have done him well so far. We're trying to reduce cheating.  You, and other posters make it sound like, if they lose one case in court, then that will release the flood gates of lawsuits. As time goes by, the're not going to be perfect. But it will be harder to a successful cheater at THIS site.

Nice idea but the problem is the methods used to catch cheaters in the first place. It's not common but there are still some instances where many are falsely accused !

Problem with that is that if we're talking about people who cheat get caught - have their account closed - then open a new account - cheat - get caught - etc etc - then I don't think they would care too much about their overall rating on here - obviously just enjoy winning - even if it's a meaningless victory.

So if they get warnings or asked to use a credit card to continue playing - they'd have no problems just starting a new account
