I suggest to split the site in two and keep both of them

Better to have 2 cornershops and double your customers than to keep only one and lose the 20%

this is real upgrade and more money to the site, since every member will have to pay 2 differrent memberships, one for live and one for on-line

or they can chose either to buy a star or a platinum in on-line V2 chess.com site or another for V3 livechess.com site

personally I will buy for both of them if something like this happens

The point of the "upgrade" is to have a single codebase for all devices.  They wish to save as much costs as possible in order to maximize profits for the site.

There is zero interest in maintaining a separate desktop site - as we witness the "mobilization" of the desktop interface and the concommittant loss of information and usability for huge buttons and wasted space.

I just had to use version 3 to create a vote chess game using a FEN string --
(upgrade idea: have a FEN generator there one can copy from...perhaps add FEN utility to the analysis board) because that facility isn't available in version two.

During the course of this I had to use the messaging system.  I find that having to load the editor when accessing messages to be a waste of time for a busy administrator.  I often only enter the messaging system to delete messages -- anything that slows that process down will "get in my way" and use up too much of my time.

If the editor wasn't there the message title could have more space and I would see more messages.  The editor should only load if I create or reply to a message -- again, it isn't automatic for a user to use the editor when entering the message system.

GIANT BUTTONS!!!!!  Are you people for real?  Fix the obnoxious button sizes.

Teams (Groups now?  Get real. LOL) The TEAM home pages are a mess.  GIANT NEWS SCROLL that is ugly as all get out.

GIANT BUTTONS!!!  GIANT BUTTONS!!! GIANT BUTTONS!!!

And still the sad sad crappy fuzzy icons.

Version 3 is still the absolute disgusting mess it always was.

I didnt know the V2 first, started with the app on ios (great, although offers less options than the online version 2+3)). The V3 is a bit slower on older hardware i think, i used it on a ibm thinkpad x41, Ubuntu, mate, no shit on it. But the V2 kind of gives you another feeling whilst playing it. The pieces start to move slower (saddle slow but you know) but finish faster. Their faster moving somehow gives me the same impression as when I read the GM Games. Even though I dont have the confidence yet that reaches over the middlegame, the fast move of my pieces kind of motivates me to also be that confident. Its great, maybe sometimes, because of that, i remembered a move that otherwise I would have overseen.

Thanks for the great site.

As I don't use the V3 app on Android (as I don't trust it), when I am forced to use V3 in Chrome on my mobile .. It takes forever to load / do anything. Granted, I'm using mobile data & I'm on a dinosaur phone.. But V2 performance is Night-&-Day different.. Far more than PC/laptop differences.

And, I hate scrolling all-the-more...

Well look at that!surprise.png  The thread is going in the toilet even without my assistance. Since the OP said she doesn't mind diagrams/cartoons. I'll defend Martin and V3 using one picture to sum up the last 10 pages.wink.png                                                                                                              phpQMkGxH.jpeg

It is true that he is an amazing defender of v3. If v3 was as good at what it does as he is at defending it ...

Both can't be kept. Once they upgrade to PHP7, v2 will break, on some level at least. Same for the other updates.

Splitting the site into two completely different environments would likely result in breakage or a fracturing of the user-base: different live chess environments, different forums, etc. It only makes real sense to keep one version, over a long period of time, in my opinion.

@modge ... thanks but I don't crave any recognition or site knighthood. Those that think I'm part of a cult or specifically defending v3, don't care to see that I did the same type of posting before v2, after v2 and now.

You can grab the FEN after setting up an Analysis board. Set up your position, click the Download button/icon and copy the FEN string. Certainly could be easier, such as the FEN appearing in the right panel automatically.

edit: nevermind that last point ... it does show up there automatically.

Saying that there is no evidence for that claim is a little outrageous. Here are some reasons why V3 is better than V2.

Variants like Bughouse, Crazyhouse, 3 check, King of the hill, Live 960 introduced to live chess. Ability to import and analyze any game played outside of Chess.com Ability to do a quick blunder check of your games in Live chess. Club tournaments in Live chess. Notifications can now be easily read and discarded by clicking on the (x) next to them, this was a pain in V2. Unlimited access to your games, this was restricted to only premium members in V2. Unlimited access to your statistics, this was again restricted to paid members in V2. Real time computer analysis - Stockfish shows you the best lines from a position, you can choose the number of lines shown by the engine. Live chess is quicker and smoother, this is a very big improvement. Piece movement in V2 was very clunky. Guess the move feature while observing top games. Theme selection in Tactics Trainer which allows you to choose tactical themes and train exclusively on puzzles that feature them. You can even focus solely on puzzles you failed in the past. Support for over 50 languages. Vision Trainer. Better way to customize your profile page by adding your own backgrounds. In V2 you had to create your own theme and the process was very tedious. Ability to embed videos at ease.

I'm not sure anything can be "a little outrageous" but I digress. Nothing there im[proves things for me, sorry.

These complainers are burning the candle at both ends and here's what I mean;  Martin guessed that 20% would leave.  This thread was started in Oct. The membership was 15.5 million. Now its 16 million. These people are making a mockery out of what the OP intended the thread to be. EARTH TO MEMBERS-- NOBODY CARES!evil.png  If you have to scroll and you don't like it, NOBODY CARES!evil.png  If you have to learn buttons and  sequence options, NOBODY CARES!evil.png  If Roger OT and xming want to leave, NOBODY CARES!evil.png  This thread reminds me of a great jazz tune by Les MaCann and Eddie Harris,  20%?  "Compared To What"??

Hmm, point is moot.  I used another database site to generate the FEN, but thanks...it's been a while since I've used any of the analysis boards and suspected they had the utility in any case.  Thanks.

Maybe a little setup board popout?  That would be a cool menu item.

Sorry is not enough, sometimes you actually need to change.

No I don't have to change at all.I have the freedom of choice. A pity that some of you dictators fail to understand that.

I can and will walk away. My money will go to a product that suits me. Others will go, others will stay and I'm sure others will discover V3 and not know about V2 and be OK with it. All that is fine. It is sad that some of the Pro V3 people have a problem with others disagreeing.

It's the way of the world folks. It is called having our own mind.  Long live freedom og choice and expression. I'll keep expressing my opinion as long as I'm here. If that upsets you, and the evidence suggests it does GOOD!
