Fault/ Restriction affecting Daily Puzzle & Tactics Trainer: 2 equal solutions but can only accept 1

Please post a +1 to help fix this fault/ limitation/ restriction affecting Daily Puzzle & Tactics Trainer & if you like include a polite, positive, constructive message regarding any improvements that you would also like to see.

You can also include any examples if you wish wink.png

I've included examples that I've seen on the Daily Puzzle, where it just stops, instead of showing it's useful/ instructive continuation/ conclusion.

Tactics Trainer also suffers from this fault although any Tactics with more than 1 equally good solution are excluded or cut so short that the solver will not be able to see the useful/ instructive, continuation/ conclusion.

Example 1, from August 11th 2017:

From page 1 onwards of this Daily Puzzle:

https://www.chess.com/forum/view/daily-puzzles/8-11-2017-feminine-power you will see lots of people stating the problem that puzzle says 3. Qg5# is Incorrect, because the other correct 3. Qd4# was chosen instead.

The puzzle can only accept 1 of the 2 correct solution moves (both are mate in 3).

Try for yourself on the Daily Puzzle page:

Or here:

Try 3. Qg5# which definitely is Checkmate, yet the puzzle will wrongly say Incorrect

Clearly 3. Qg5# is also an equally valid checkmate but the puzzle will say it's incorrect because the program can only accept 1 of the correct answers, 3. Qd4#.

Hopefully you now understand the problem (if you didn't already) that the program needs fixing/ updating/ improving.

Please post a +1 to help fix wink.png

This is only the 2nd time I have seen this, but it's a problem that needs fixing, in the meantime it would be best to avoid any puzzle with 2 equally valid solutions, when the puzzle can only accept 1, wrongly calling the other solution incorrect.

As already mentioned by others this particular puzzle can be modified to create only 1 correct answer.

Corrected by changing 2. ... Ke5 to Ke3

The puzzle/ tactic doesn't even need to accept multiple solution lines, even if it's just dual, accepting 2 equally correct answers, this would solve this problem along with most others & also free up/ enable loads of puzzles & tactics to be viable, and your existing puzzles would not have to be curtailed, enabling them to continue to a more significant point.

Is this something you're working on?

Can any staff answer this question?

Am I asking in the wrong place?, should I be asking in Help & Support?

Use the contact button, they don't often read these forum.

Thanks VicountVonJames, I'm sure a member of staff does read this section at least once a week, and there is alot of stuff to wade through.

Currently on my phone via web, at home I go via app., I have no contact button, maybe you can provide a link?

This is what I have tried https://www.chess.com/forum/category/suggestions takes me back here.

https://support.chess.com/ info., but no contacts, except for Click here to meet the team!:

https://www.chess.com/article/view/about-chesscom Lots of contacts but who?

Here's another 1 from the next day, again lots of people are highlighting this problem, starting with BryanCFB on page 2, #30:

Here you can see 4. Qf7+ is also equally valid but the puzzle will say it's incorrect because it isn't 4. Qg6+.

Oh. I'll try get one,

I think
You'll have to copy it onto your bar. I can't seem to get a blue link.

Okay, thanks for that, I'll also go down that route.

In future to activate your link, turning it blue, simply press return or enter after it wink.png

Like this:

https://support.chess.com/customer/portal/emails/new wink.png

Or you could highlight the link and right click it and then click on "go to ..."

In v3, hover over the little ? in a circle, either beside "help" at the top or on the to right corner of every page (depending on the where you are on the page) and choose the menu item that seems most appropriate.  This will most likely get a better response than using a Support Ticket

Thanks CM, I'll follow up your direction thumbup.png

Of course, programmers/techs prioritize their work.  They may or may not see this as a anything immediate, but at least it will be on their desks.

When there are two equally quick routes to the solution, this will be an oversight on the part of the puzzle maker, as the software will only allow one solution. As you say, Brendan, this 'This is only the 2nd time I have seen this' so. we must make allowances for  'human puzzle maker error' or, come up with some alternative software.  You could go along with 'CM's' suggestion of making a suggestion but, as the site's format has recently been changed, I don't think you'll manage to push the right buttons.

Yes Brian, I delayed sending in this report precisely because they are improving & fixing any problems with v.3 & this can be included whenever is best for them.

You know from the comments how vexed some people can get when they input an equally correct move, only to be told that it's incorrect, everyone can appreciate their frustration wink.png

They can only fix a problem, if they know what the problem is wink.png

Here's today's example: https://www.chess.com/forum/view/daily-puzzles/8-26-2017-pawns-make-all-the-difference?page=1

As you can see the puzzle rejects the equally correct 3. Rg8+! as incorrect, both are mate in 5.

Hi Stephenson2, as far as I'm aware the Daily Puzzle & Tactics have always only been able to accept 1 correct answer, rendering the other correct answer incorrect.  Although you've been here longer than I have wink.png

version 3 is the bug

If you ever have something constructive to say, it would be nice to hear it.

Here's another example from Sat 2nd September: https://www.chess.com/forum/view/daily-puzzles/9-2-2017-manca-vs-braga-1992

Clearly 4. Nd7# is also a valid checkmate, but the puzzle will say it's incorrect because it isn't 4. Rxc8#.

The puzzle can only accept 1 of the 2 correct solution moves.

Here's another example from Monday 25th September:

Now the switchover from v.2 to v.3 is complete, it's much easier to make improvements than it was running both at the same time.

Maybe they are working on this already?, but to try & make sure it's included in the current v.3 fixes, I have provided screenshots & links via both Report a Bug, Make a Suggestion & always include a link to this thread wink.png

If you also want this restriction to be solved then please +1, the more +1's, the greater chance of improving Daily Puzzle & Tactics Trainer being included in the current v.3 fixes, or as soon as possible (one +1 per member wink.png).
