It sounds reasonable, as a sort of option to correspondance chess just like chess 960 is. However, it comes to mind the ease with which the player is now able to cheat, without anyone ever able to notice (chess boards at home etc.). Since you can't check it, why make this rule?
I'd say discuss with your opponent before the game and have good faith, which would essentially come down to the same thing imo.
