No sir. We cannot persuade that person to be pleasant. If they don't want to be nice, they're not going to be nice.
That said, a moderator could probably take away their posting abilities for awhile.

Hey Tom, it is unfortunate that you've come across such a person. I find that those calling other names are usually poor players themselves. I've had a few games where my opponent makes similar comments. I simply ignore them. I would say comments like "you suck" should be treated as another comment from the peanut gallery. However, if this individual starts getting personal, report them to the staff. I've been around here since the early days of chess.com and with an increase in membership we've had an increase in people lacking manners. Just ignore them. Personally, I've had people say that to me and all it did was made me hit the books and study the game. I have to thank everyone that said that to me because I now teach chess for a living and do well at it. Thanks peanut gallery. Tom, take the high road and ignore them!
Instead of complaining in the forum, get hold of a staff member such as "kohai" and write the staff member a message airing your complaint.
There is someone posting 'dude, you suck' and only 'dude, you suck' in the forum 'I need to get better' at chess.

Can we persuade this person to be pleasant?
No, but if he gets too out-of-hand, the staff will shut him up.
That looks hauntingly familiar- is that where they shot the guy who stole the tank?
I don't know what you're talking about, but probably.
Please don't 'name names' in the forums when complaining.
There are more effective and private means, such as completing a Support 'ticket' (visit the Help & Support link at the bottom of most pages).
Or, much faster, merely 'block' anyone who gives offense to you so you do not encounter them again.

I know nothing about the United States. You did ask which is the finest city in the USA. My vote would go to New York. I like 'Law and Order'. I have heard that we, the US and the UK, are two nations divided by a common language.
I am glad that some people cared enough about my post that they responded.
We have a saying in Old England: Many hands make light work.
Good fences make good neighbours.
I thank you kindly.
Another way to thank us, would be to edit out the member's name (which will save a Moderator from ending up doing this).
Whoever you badmouth, I think it inappropriate to: (a) copy private game chat here (your opponents have an 'expectation of privacy'), and, (b) complain about someone specifically by name (instead, if they're worth more effort than 'blocking', submit a 'support' ticket to Staff).

People who do that tend to be cowardly in real life. I mean, what purpose does it serve to say such things while hiding behind a screen? That they can get away with it because they can "hit and run"?
Is there an ignore feature?
I choose to name and shame in order to encourage others to be pleasant.
I accept that one of the dangers of sticking ones head over the parapet is that one might get ones head shot off.
I am prosecuting the abuser as a witness to the abuse. I defend somone working on getting better at chess being abused and I'm angry that all some of you can do is knock me. It's no skin off my nose if this bloke gets abused. I could just stand by and let him get hurt. It's none of my business.

You chose to break the site's rules? I'm saddened.
Naming and shaming are expressly forbidden in the main forums. This is not the proper way to deal with this individual. In the future, please simply block abusers. Thanks!

Excellent concept with which I agree, and considering the original poster's level of abuse here on these forums .....
