Why does the computer make obviously dumb moves?

I've so far played less than 10 times, mainly against the medium-level computer, but already 3 times the computer (black) has chosen Ke7 when it could have and should have castled. That helps me win against it, but doesn't improve my chess! What's going on?! A player with a rating of 1200 would never do that... I have an example screen snapshot file, but don't know how to attach it here. I tried to upload the file with "Insert an image", but it didn't work. Anyway, an example is not necessary since the problem should be clear even without one...

Because most of its other moves are 2500 level.  So if they don't put in the "dumb" moves, then it would crush almost anyone who faces it.

Still, it does raise an interesting question.  After all, computers used to all play like beginners...so can't they just use some of those old programs?

Which raises another question:  were computers bad then because the software was lame, or simply because the hardware was so rudimentary?

So there is really no such thing as a real 1200 computer. A computer that plays much more erratically than a player is of questionable use, I would say. But for starters, the programmers could disallow the "dumb" computer to move its king to e7 when it should castle. Would that be too much to ask?

Why not just play against other players? Plenty of them in the 1200 range on here.

Yes, and I agree to this too.

I agree to all of this too!
