A bug or normal?

I am right now in my first tournament for intermediate players. One player gave up the game when he was about to loose- and i got my rating points for that. I was really happy. But the next thing that happens is that a new game with the same person starts right away. So i have to play with him again 🥴

Is that normal in a tournament? Or is this a bug? Do we have to play two or more games with each player? Is the tournament a never ending story? With games starting over and over again? I hope someone understand my Norwenglish 😅 because right now i am really scared of being stucked in a tournament for the next ten years.

You are in a daily tournament that started yesterday. There are 228 players.

Everyone is put in a group of 12 players.

You have to play each player in your group twice. You start with 11 games, one against each player.   Since you finished your first game against one player, you could start your second.

When everyone finishes their first round games, a second round will start with the top 3 finishers from each group put into a new group of 12. The tournament will go on for at least 3 rounds.

While you may finish all your games quickly, some people will play slowly and each round could take months to complete.

The whole tournament could take up to a year to complete.

Whoa. So i could actually be stucked for the next ten years... Thanks for your reply and the  screenshot. Where did you find that information? I only use my phone when i play chess and its difficult to find stuff on the app.  

... and the person who arranged the tournament did unfortunately not respond to my question about how the tournaments work, so i suppose i was a bit spontanious when i pushed at the tournament button      

With 12-player sections I would have expected 22 games to start at once (11 with White where a player can move immediately and 11 with Black where a player would have to wait for White to move before moving).  With 228 players and 12-player sections that is 19 sections and at least 19 players moving on to round two (more if all tied-for-first advance).  I would expect the tournament to be finished in three rounds (probable) or four rounds (if all tied-for-first advance and there was a tie for first in round three).

There is a lot of information available on the website that is not on the apps.

I use the Chrome browser app to pull up the chess.com website on my Android phone and it works well.

I'm quoting this to add some emphasis to this. I only use the app or mobile occasionally for playing individual moves. I can't imagine playing entire tournaments on the app, the desktop experience is much better.
