Are there a number of required moves (ex. 40 moves in 2 hrs.) using a clock?

There can be--the "time control" is set by the players (or the tournament organizer) before the game begins. A fairly common time control is 40/2 SD/1, meaning "Each player has 2 hours to complete the first 40 moves; after a player completes his 40th move, 1 hour is added to his time; after this point, the game is played as 'sudden death,' where there are no new additions of time." Thus each player has a maximum of 3 hours for all his moves (excluding any delay time--but that's another story).

Of course, you can set your clock for pretty much any time control. At my blitz club, we very often play G/7, which means that each player begins with 7 minutes on the clock--here, the whole game (thus "Game 7") must be played in the 7 minutes, and no time is added when you hit 40 moves.
