So I'm going to a chess tournament in about 2 weeks or so and it's been a few years since I've played in one... and I'm just wondering if any of you guys have any tips to prepare? Like, how to not be nervous, stuff to bring or use there, how to practice or chess tips in general?

Thanks! Laughing

1. Get plenty of rest.

2. Stay hydrated.  Drink plenty of water, and stay away from energy drinks, sodas. sugary drinks.

3. DO NOT eat heavy meals before a round.  Go with something lite.

4. Bring healthy snacks.

5. Warm up your brain with some tactics in the morning before a round starts.

Good advice, GP. About getting nervous. Take some deep breaths, and exhale slowly. Its pretty common to be slightly nervous, but you should be fine. Take your time, and don't rush your moves.

Double check the whole position even after you decide what your move will be, and make sure your king is safe. Also always look for a better move. Try to see what your opponent is planning, and what his move will be also.

If you feel nervous, also don't be afraid to excuse yourself from the board, walk outside, get some fresh air, or get a soothing drink, I like Blue berry, or black berry tea personally. Splash cold water on your face, and try to clear your mind, and calm yourself.

If you find you are stuck in a position you don't like, take a little stroll, and think about it away from the board for a few minutes if possible. It may help you get a fresh perspective when you come back to the board, if you are still nervous, try visualizing your opponent in a funny looking hat, or something that amuses you. Good luck, and enjoy yourself.

Also post your results, and some of the games you played. So others can learn from your personal insights.

Definitely bring something to snack on. A healthy breakfast bar, or two, is a good choice. Make sure you have everything you need to play a game of chess. Set, Board, pen, score book, and clock as well. Again best of luck.

Also ask the ones running the tournament, for rules, and any other info, you need to know.
