Is it sometimes advantageous to lose quickly than to win late?

I'm thinking here of Arena rather than Swiss and short time controls.  Sometimes I win a game down to the last second and my standing goes down,  others I lose early and ... well it doesn't go up but it goes down less and I get on with a game where I may win.

Is anyone clever enough to put an equation to this?

It's not obviously a tactic but maybe resigning a difficult game could be more useful than wasting tournament time on what will likely be a lose anyway.

The more games you can play the better, in an Arena, so I can see resigning in a game that you think you are going to lose anyway, to get into a new game more quickly.
